What puts us at risk of knee osteoarthritis?

A new global systematic review and meta-analysis led by our researchers at the University of Sydney has some powerful answers, and itโ€™s just been featured in the latest issue of InMotion, the official magazine of the Australian Physiotherapy Association ๐Ÿ‘

Dr Vicky Duong (Kolling Institute, University of Sydney) and A/Prof Christina Abdel Shaheed (School of Public Health) conducted the largest-ever review of knee OA risk factorsโ€”drawing on data from 131 studies across 7 databases and 3 registries ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ“š

๐Ÿ” Their key findings:
โœ… Overweight/obesity, previous knee injury, and occupational physical activity (e.g. heavy manual work or >20 years of shift work) are linked to increased risk
โœ… Higher bone mineral density in certain areas may also increase risk
โœ… Lifestyle factors such as a Mediterranean diet, high-fibre intake, and even green tea (in men!) may lower your risk

๐Ÿ“Š This research highlights how better preventive strategies and workplace health approaches could reduce the burden of knee OAโ€”one of the leading causes of disability worldwide.

๐Ÿ™Œ Big congratulations to Vicky and Christina for this important contribution to osteoarthritis research โ€” and thank you to InMotion for helping promote their work!

๐Ÿ’œ Womenโ€™s Health Week is a chance to spotlight health conditions that impact women most.

Women have unique biological characteristics and social experiences that shape their health outcomes across the lifespan. From reproductive health to chronic disease risk and mental well-being, the health needs of women evolve through childhood, adolescence, adulthood, and older age. These needs are further influenced by social determinants such as income, education, cultural background, and geographic location.

๐Ÿ”ฌWomen are more likely than men to develop certain types of osteoarthritis, especially knee OA, due to factors like hormonal changes, joint structure, and biomechanics.

Thatโ€™s why weโ€™re part of the TOPS (The Osteoarthritis Prevention Study) trial, a world-first study testing whether diet and exercise can prevent knee osteoarthritis in women over 50 who are at risk but donโ€™t yet have significant knee pain.

๐Ÿฆต By focusing on prevention, TOPS is helping women stay active, independent, and healthy as they age.

Meet the people behind the Osteoarthritis Clinical Research Group ๐ŸŒŸ

This week we sat down with Vicky from our team and asked her a couple of questions. Here's what she said ๐ŸŽค๐Ÿ˜Š

07/08/2025

Our researchers at the Kolling Institute are leading a national clinical trial to support people with hip or knee osteoarthritis become more active.

What if we could stop osteoarthritis in its tracks? Professor David Hunter explains how.

In the latest episode of Tomorrowโ€™s Medicine Today, global osteoarthritis expert Prof David Hunter discusses the critical role of lifestyle, weight management and early intervention in tackling osteoarthritis. He also explores promising treatments like Ozempic and calls for urgent investment in prevention strategies to address the growing crisis.

๐Ÿ‘ Our latest research has shown that living a healthy lifestyle can reduce your risk of osteoarthritis (OA) by up to 50% - even if you have a high genetic risk.

In a study of over 300,000 people, those who:

โœ… Maintained a healthy weight

๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ Stayed physically active

๐Ÿฅ— Ate a balanced diet

๐Ÿ˜ด Got quality sleep

๐Ÿช‘ Limited sitting time

had a much lower chance of developing OA in the knee, hip, or overall.

๐Ÿงฌ Healthy habits can override genetic risk. Read more here: https://academic.oup.com/rheumatology/advance-article/doi/10.1093/rheumatology/keaf327/8169802

๐Ÿ… A Champion Among Us! ๐Ÿ…

The OARCG team is thrilled to celebrate an incredible achievement by our inspiring osteoarthritis consumer, David , who just WON Gold at the World Aquathlon Age Championships (80โ€“84 category) in Pontevedra! ๐ŸŒ๐Ÿ’ช

This is more than just a personal victory โ€” it's a win for Australia and a win for everyone living with osteoarthritis. ๐Ÿ™Œ

David kindly thanked our team for the support with strengthening exercises, shoe advice, and pain management techniques โ€” all of which have helped him reach this amazing milestone. ๐ŸŠโ€โ™‚๏ธ๐Ÿƒโ€โ™‚๏ธ

And he has a message for others living with osteoarthritis:

โ€œThe message is to keep going โ€” a reasonable amount of running wonโ€™t make things worse (Iโ€™ve stopped doing anything over 10k for the past 2 years) โ€” and it all goes well with swimming.โ€

An inspiring reminder that movement, when done right, can be empowering at any age. ๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘๐Ÿ‘

๐ŸŽ‰ First Participant Randomised! ๐ŸŽ‰
Weโ€™re thrilled to share that our very first participant has been successfully randomised into the CASCADEโ€‘OA trial!

๐Ÿง  Whatโ€™s the study about?
The CASCADEโ€‘OA study, led by the University of Sydney, is evaluating a selfโ€‘guided 12โ€‘week physical activity program for people with hip or knee osteoarthritis. Participants are randomly assigned to either:

Group A: The 12โ€‘week program plus a Fitbit, or
Group B: A Fitbit with no additional program.

Our aim? To discover if this selfโ€‘managed intervention can boost physical activity, ease symptoms, and improve quality of lifeโ€”and whether it can be delivered effectively at scale in Australia.

๐Ÿƒโ€โ™€๏ธ One participant down, many more to go! Big thanks to our team, supporters & participant. Hereโ€™s to advancing osteoarthritis care โ€” one step at a time. ๐ŸŒŸ

๐ŸŒฟ NAIDOC Week 2025: Honoring Strength, Vision & Legacy ๐ŸŒฟ

This year marks the 50th anniversary of NAIDOC Week, celebrating the enduring strength, resilience, and cultural richness of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples. The 2025 theme, "The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy," emphasises the vital role of young leaders in shaping a future grounded in cultural pride and self-determination.

At the Osteoarthritis Research Group, we recognise the importance of inclusive research that respects and integrates Indigenous knowledge and perspectives to ensure that First Nations communities have access to culturally safe and relevant healthcare options, particularly in the realm of osteoarthritis research and treatment.

As we celebrate this milestone, we reflect on the strength of our Elders, the vision of our youth, and the legacy of our ancestors. Together, we strive for a future where Indigenous voices lead the way in health and healing.

Last week our team got together for lunch to farewell Mila Van de Pol ๐Ÿ‘‹ Mila is a Biomedical Masters student from Leiden University Medical Centre in the Netherlands who has been visiting our Osteoarthritis Clinical Research Group for the last couple of months. While she has been with us, Mila has been focusing on the secondary analyses of some of our supplement trials. On top of her dedicated work, Mila always brought a smile and laughs to the office and was often found unintentionally matching outfits with the team ๐Ÿคฃ We wish Mila all the best and hope she comes back to visit us again soon! โœจ
