Do you have lymphoedema?

Many women develop this after treatment for breast cancer, but are rarely warned about it. Damage to the lymph nodes, or removal of them, can lead to lymphatic accumulation and significant pain/discomfort/lack of movement.

Exercise is always recommended, but when someone is recovering from cancer treatment, it is important to listen to your body and not overdo it.

Lymphatic drainage massage is highly recommended, as are compression garments that can help drain the fluid. Using specialised lymphatic gloves, can also be really helpful (and very affordable), and can be used even when in bed or sitting in a chair.

I will always recommend working with a naturopath (like me!) who can make sure you are getting good nutrition and provide supportive care to aid in recovery.

Have you heard of the glymphatic system?

This recently discovered lymphatic system in the brain is associated with numerous cognitive health issues including Alzheimer’s disease. Think of it like the cleaning system of the brain where we want to drain the dirty water and get it out of the body.

Sleep deprivation, alcohol consumption, low omega 3 intake (fish/seafood) and chronic stress are all known to impact the effectiveness of glymphatic drainage.

By simply learning to move this fluid through facial massage using your fingers or a tool like a gua sha can make a world of difference.

Better still, it can reduce that extra fluid that makes you look puffy. Who doesn’t want that?

There are some fabulous videos on YouTube and gua sha tools are readily available and very cheap to buy (yes, I do have these in clinic for my clients too).

If you are worried about dementia or Alzheimer’s, then adding this simple routine to your day can make the world of difference, as well as staying properly hydrated, eating well, exercising, stressing less…you know, all of the good stuff that keeps us healthy!

Have you heard of the glymphatic system? Would you add this to your morning or evening routine?

Do you carry extra fluid in your feet, ankles or hands or notice a puffy face when you wake up?

Then you have some stagnant lymphatic fluid. That fluid accumulation is called oedema and it tells us that you are not moving toxins out of the body. This can impact on many different body systems from the heart, immune system and skin, to name just a few.

If you do one thing today, clean your lymphatic system. You can do it with movement, deep breathing, a lymphatic massage or with a set of specially designed lymphatic gloves.

I want as many people as possible to get the benefit of moving their lymph, which is why I now stock these gloves in clinic.

I have seen incredible things already, from NO oedema in the ankles of a 70-year-old woman who was previously in significant pain from it to a woman in her 40s who has noticed a significant reduction in swollen lymph glands and cystic breasts.

When did you last clean your water bottle?

No seriously. When was it? If you can’t remember then IT IS TIME. Do it. You’re welcome.

Now whilst we are talking about cleaning, let’s discuss your lymphatic system. This complex system of vessels, lymph nodes and organs is like our internal washing machine and our second circulatory system alongside the blood. What do we do with the dirty water once we have filtered out the dirt and crap from our clothes? Well, we get it out of the machine, don’t we? So we need to do the same with our lymphatic fluid.

If you have chronic skin or immune issues, hormones that won’t play nice or you can’t shift that excess weight no matter what you do, then your washing machine (that’d be your lymph) needs cleaning out. In fact, if you have ANY health issue, you probably need to get your lymph moving.

There are no lymphatic pumps in our body like there are for the blood, so we have to manually move it. If you’re sitting at a desk all day, it ain’t moving. If you’re not really exercising, it’s not moving. If you’re not breathing properly … well, you get the idea, right?

So how do we move it then I hear you ask?

Start by moving your body and breathing well. These things can gently squeeze your lymphatic vessels and move the lymph fluid towards your heart.

A lymphatic drainage massage is definitely the best option, especially for those who are sedentary. But not everyone can afford to do that regularly.

I am now recommending a set of specialised lymphatic gloves for all clients I see in clinic. You can use them too! Check out ‘Chelsey Jean Lymphatics’ on Facebook and Instagram to find out more.

If we all cleaned our lymphatic fluid regularly, our bodies would be soooo much cleaner and healthier. Get on it!

Are you deficient in minerals such as calcium, zinc and magnesium?

If you have low stomach acid (clues include symptoms like poor appetite, burping, reflux), you won’t be absorbing your minerals.

If you have a bowel pH that is favouring acidity (when it should be alkaline), it can draw alkalising minerals into the bowel in an attempt to correct the pH imbalance.

The solution here is NOT to take mineral supplements, but to correct pH in the stomach, small intestine and large intestine.

As I always say, the answer rarely lies in the bottle of a supplement bottle.

Have you ever wondered why you have ALL of the symptoms of an under-active thyroid but your blood tests come back normal?

Let’s start with the classic symptoms of low thyroid – weight gain/inability to lose weight, constipation, fatigue, insomnia, depression and numerous others.

Now let’s talk testing. Firstly, ‘within range’ doesn’t always mean normal. Secondly, what exactly has been checked?

Often the only marker that is tested is TSH, which is NOT a thyroid hormone but a signalling molecule from the brain that tells the thyroid to make thyroid hormone. It is also the most unreliable and changeable marker. If you look at TSH in isolation of thyroid hormones, reverse T3 and antibodies, then you only have a very small piece of the puzzle.

I just checked my bloods (it’s been 7 years ... it was time), and my conversion of T4 to T3, which is the active hormone (and the one we want), isn’t really happening too well. Why? Because I have cortisol issues (it has been a rocky few months) and deficiencies in zinc and iodine.

So guess what I’ll be working on in the next few months?

If you want to find out more about comprehensive testing, which has a small out of pocket fee, and get to the bottom of your thyroid issues, book a FREE 15 minute discovery call today. https://deniseberrynaturopath.com

Do you drink soft drink? We know it’s not good for us, but have you ever stopped to wonder why?

German doctor Otto Walburg believes that one glass of Coke takes 32 glasses of water at a pH of 10 to counteract the acid that Coke produces inside our body.

Firstly, that’s a LOT of water, and if you aren’t drinking alkaline water, well, you’re never going to offset the damage.

But what does an acidic environment lead to? Nothing good i.e. illness, inflammatory disorders, cancer.

The takeaway here is that soft drink is bad.

What are your thoughts? Will this stop you drinking it?

Hands up if you have done a parasite cleanse or two? Or perhaps you do them regularly?
I have a question for you - do you actually KNOW you have a parasite?

Again, the internet is full of information and it can be hard to discern fact from fiction. Parasite cleanses are one of the worst in my opinion, because it is essentially dropping an atomic bomb in your gut. What about the good guys? Who is looking out for them?

Here are two major things I would like you to consider before embarking on a parasite cleanse:
1. Have you tested your gut to find out if you do have a parasite? Depending on what it is, it may require a different approach (if indeed it does exist at all).

2. STOP KILLING. Seriously, the number of people who have a severely depleted microbiome because they have been using essential oils internally or other over the counter treatments is terrifying. We need to FEED the good guys, not nuke them.

If you have gut issues, get to the root cause of them. More often than not it is actually a dysbiotic gut that is causing the issue, NOT a parasite or even a pathogenic strain of bacteria like E. coli (although these are more prevalent than parasites).

I know I’ve shared this CADA recipe before, but it’s that time of year where the days are getting warmer and we are looking for an alternative breakfast that is delicious and easy. If you are wanting to ditch the cardboard cereals (yes, Denise is not a fan) or toast, try this. You can thank me for it later.

𝙄𝙉𝙂𝙍𝙀𝘿𝙄𝙀𝙉𝙏𝙎
40g unsweetened dried/desiccated coconut (2 heaped tablespoons)
1 apple, quartered and core removed
2 pitted Medjool dates
20g almonds (or just a small handful if you are lazy like me)

𝙈𝙀𝙏𝙃𝙊𝘿
Add ingredients to a Thermomix or food processor and pulse until you reach desired consistency. Roughly chopped is what you are aiming for, not pureed slop!

You can tweak it by changing up the fruit/nuts or adding spices like cinnamon (Ceylon is the best) and adding yoghurt.

This keeps well in the fridge for a few days. I often make it up in bulk for a busy week ahead.

(Thanks to the wonderful Cyndi O’Meara for this gem.)

Enjoy!

Hey there! I’m Denise. If you are new to this page, welcome. Here’s a little bit about me and how I work.

I am not your average naturopath. I have done extensive training in nutrigenomics, microbiome testing and gut health and homeopathic/isopathic treatment as used extensively in Germany. I avoid synthetic nutrients like the plague and do my very best to keep things SIMPLE for my clients. My philosophy is the least amount of interventions the better.

I spend a lot of time with new clients and this is 100% on purpose. I need to discover their underlying drivers so I can devise a treatment strategy that will actually work. Then I EDUCATE my clients - this is the key component to success, because if you understand what is going on in your body, you will be more motivated to make changes to improve your health.

If you have worked with practitioners in the past who have sent you out the door with a shopping list or spreadsheet of supplements, and you have no idea what you are taking or why, I get the disillusionment. I’ve had the same experience and I swore I would never be that kind of practitioner. And I am not!

So, if you are keen to work with someone who will do the work to get to the root cause of your health issues, book a FREE 15 minute discovery call today. Link in bio: https://deniseberrynaturopath.com
