If you ever want to understand your genetic risk when it comes to diseases later in life, you need look no further than your own family history.

Ask your parents about your grandparents' health. Knowledge is power here.

And just because your parents or grandparents had a certain health issue, doesnโ€™t mean you will get it. It just increases your ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ด๐˜ฌ.

We all have the power to modify the expression of our genes. We can do this through our daily choices and behaviours, including diet, lifestyle, exercise, sleep, managing stress and perhaps most importantly finding our joy.

My clinical approach to working with clients always focuses on influencing our genes to reduce inflammation and oxidative stress in order to reduce disease risk.

Remember, everything in our environment, including the food you eat, will have a conversation with your genes.

Nutrigenomics is my passion. And it is simple and effective.

One of my favourite clients, who has always typically been in great health but is continually looking at ways to optimise health as he gets older (he is currently in his 70s), wanted to do a microbiome analysis. We caught up recently to go through the results.

He had an amazing gut with a very healthy species count, which is very protective for health and wellbeing. But there were definitely some things that could be improved. He was surprised that most of this could be achieved by tweaking aspects of his diet, which he was totally committed to doing. There were a couple of things we did want to improve quickly, so a couple of very specific supplements were chosen for this reason. He will do a follow up test in 12 months time to check his progress and see what else he could tweak.

Microbiome testing is really useful in chronic conditions too, but as you can see it can be helpful in optimising your health.

Medications for this condition make millions each year for pharmaceutical companies, but do they actually do anything for our health? Are they solving a problem or creating a new one?

I appreciate this is a divisive topic, but my goal is always to optimise health without the need for medication. And in the majority of cases, it IS possible.

Firstly, you need to understand what the key drivers are for high blood pressure and then work on these. Sometimes this can be challenging because it will involve making changes to your diet and lifestyle.

But trust me when I say that it is totally worth it.

You really canโ€™t put a price on your health and well being.

As a naturopath, I have helped many people to understand their unique key drivers, supported them through dietary and lifestyle changes and celebrated the wins when they have not only got their blood pressure back in optimal range, but have avoided medication entirely.

And before you ask, if you are already on medication, we can work with that too. The goal is that you wonโ€™t need it in the long run, but for some people, they do need a low dose to keep things stable.

Most of my clients have heard this terminology before, but it doesnโ€™t really adequately describe what is going on in the gut.

What I mean by this, is the gut isnโ€™t โ€˜leakyโ€™ per se. If you imagine your digestive tract as a hose (from your mouth to your butt), that hose or pipe doesnโ€™t have a heap of holes in it. What it has is a whole stack of โ€˜gatesโ€™ between each gut cell that can be open too much or open all of the time, and this can allow some undesirable substances to get through into your blood stream and cause you harm.

Common causes of leaky gut include medications, heavy metal/toxin exposure, alcohol use and poor dietary choices. (As an aside, whilst gluten is included in this, in my experience that Australian wheat is more at fault than other gluten containing grains such as rye and spelt and many of my clients thrive on these.)

Intestinal hyper-permeability (or leaky gut) is linked to literally every chronic disease state including diabetes, high blood pressure and cholesterol, osteoarthritis and autoimmune disease, just to name a few.

Our goal is to strengthen the tight junctions (or gates), so they open and close appropriately. We do this through diet and lifestyle change and offsetting things we cannot change such as medication with some well chosen and effective supplements.

LEARNING TO LOOK BEYOND THE HYPE
Clients are often asking me what I think about a product they have seen online or on social media or perhaps have had recommended to them by friends or family. This happens regularly. Daily even.

What do I tell them?

That usually the marketing hype does not match the quality. They are also not individualised, and what may be good for someone else doesnโ€™t mean it is any good for you.

Health is never found in the bottom of a supplement bottle. Yes, even the ones I use with clients!

Real health comes from the choices you make every day including the food you prepare and consume, the fluids you drink, how you move your body, your sleep quality, how you manage stress and, most importantly, how you enjoy your life.

Supplements CAN help, but they usually donโ€™t solve the problem.

The best results my clients see are when they are ready to embrace true health and wellbeing and make positive changes for themselves and their family.

If you are ready to make the change and want to know how I can help you achieve your health goals, book a FREE 15 minute discovery call today. Link in bio: https://deniseberrynaturopath.com

I donโ€™t know about you, but I can sometimes have my attention grabbed by some excellent marketing. But what I have learned over the years is to delve a little deeper beyond the hype and take a look at exactly what is being offered.

Letโ€™s start with food.

My golden rule these days is that it should be as close to nature with as few ingredients as possible. This means I rarely shop in the middle aisles of the supermarket and my pantry is stocked with raw ingredients that I then make into yummy stuff. But if you donโ€™t have the time or head space for this (yet), then always pick up the product on offer and read the ingredients list. If it has dodgy oils like canola, vegetable or other inflammatory seed oils, put it back and move on. Itโ€™s the same if you see any of the following: flavours, sweeteners, โ€˜E numbersโ€™ or anything else you donโ€™t recognise as an actual food.

Remember, real food literally talks to your body cells. Processed and dead food does not.

So if you are wanting to improve your health and well being, start with eating real food.

WELCOME TO AUTUMN!
This is my favourite season of all. The sting of the hot summer sun has gone, the air is fresh and cool and the colours of the leaves are starting to change to those beautiful shades of gold, orange and red. There is just so much to love about autumn.

Itโ€™s also a great time to get your health on track. Kids are back at school, we are back at work and everything is back in rhythm again, so itโ€™s a perfect time to look at what you can change in your life to improve your well being.

Perhaps it is better food choices? Less (or no) alcohol? More exercise? Joining a meditation, yoga or pilates class? Maybe even seeing a Naturopath?

Whatever it is that you need to do for you, stop putting it off. Prioritise YOU. Because you are worth the effort.

These (very expensive) drugs are all the rage at the moment. Aside from the very real side effects experienced by many people (the black box warning should encourage you to look for another alternative), they are only providing a solution whilst you take the drug, meaning you may end up being a customer for life (or until you get sick).

Hereโ€™s the thing: Itโ€™s not sexy, itโ€™s not a quick fix and it takes a willingness to make dietary and lifestyle changes, but you CAN lose weight when you work with the drivers of weight gain and obesity. These include gut health, liver detoxification, lymphatic flow and restoring insulin sensitivity.

For example, by increasing dietary fibre such as beta glucans derived from organic rolled oats (see diagram), weight loss can be significantly enhanced.

Again, the key is to work with your biochemistry and to make small sustainable changes to get to the end goal. Thatโ€™s where I can help โ€“ no gimmicks, no marketing, just sensible advice and achievable steps.

My friend Jo makes this for her family every Xmas. It feeds a crowd, is full of wholesome ingredients and is rich in prebiotic fibre (so itโ€™s good for you as well as being colourful and delicious).

SALAD INGREDIENTS
1 cup brown basmati rice or quinoa (or a mix of the two)
2 tbsp each of pumpkin seeds, slivered almonds and pine nuts
ยฝ bunch each of coriander and parsley, chopped
ยฝ red onion, finely diced
1 tin lentils, drained and rinsed
2 tbsp capers
ยฝ cup currants
1 lebanese cucumber, diced into small cubes
1 red capsicum, diced
2 cups thinly sliced rocket or spinach
juice of 1 lemon
3 tbsp. extra virgin olive oil
salt and pepper to taste

DRESSING INGREDIENTS:
1 cup Greek yoghurt
1 tsp ground cumin
1 tbsp honey
1 pomegranate, deseeded

INSTRUCTIONS:
Cook brown rice/quinoa as per packet directions. Set aside and allow to cool.
Toast pumpkin seeds, almonds and pine nuts, being careful not to burn them. Set aside and allow to cool.
Combine brown rice/quinoa, toasted seeds, fresh herbs, onion, lentils, capers, currants, cucumber, capsicum and rocket/spinach in a large bowl.
Add lemon juice, olive oil, salt and pepper and toss to combine well. Refrigerate until needed.

Bread used to be a staple food. What we call bread today is largely unrecognisable to its ancestors and it is not doing us any good at all.

Iโ€™m not a fan of standard bread made with Australian wheat and yeast for many reasons, but add in all of the other emulsifiers, seed oils and other totally unnecessary ingredients and you have a disaster for your gut.

Real bread should consist of 3 ingredients: flour, water and salt. That is it.

A sourdough starter made from flour and water helps ferment the bread, breaking down the gluten and making it easier to digest.

Making bread at home IS easy, and trust me when I say it it tastes much better than the store bought varieties. My favourite is rye, spelt and khorosan/kamut, and I will often combine flours to get different textures and tastes.

Gluten free? Well, the store bought options are even worse. Always read the ingredients list and educate yourself on what they are. If you see modified tapioca starch, please run for the hills (or just put the bread back on the shelf).

If you are gluten free because you are coeliac, learn to make your own bread at home. There are some fabulous recipes out there (my GF bread roll recipe is a hit with everyone who has tried it).

If you are avoiding gluten because you are gluten sensitive, you probably are โ€˜wheat sensitiveโ€™ so simply switching to spelt, rye and khorosan (or even possibly Italian wholewheat) can make a huge difference, and it is amazing for your gut health.

If weight loss is your goal this year and you want to avoid medications, fad diets and expensive cleanses, then this post is for you.

Here are my top tips for firing up your metabolism:
- simply follow a Mediterranean-style diet that is high in plants (therefore high in fibre) and omega 3 fatty acids (i.e. fish), with moderate amounts of lean animal protein and low saturated fat (stick to olive oil, avocado and fatty fish and avoid butter, cream, coconut oil/cream etc)
- eat 3 meals a day, have a piece of fruit with your meal (an apple or ยฝ cup of mixed organic berries are ideal) and avoid snacking
- ditch refined sugar and processed foods completely
- avoid supermarket bread and gluten-free products and include quality rye and/or spelt sourdough bread
- stop drinking your calories i.e. alcohol, juice, milky coffees, soft drinks etc. Instead drink herbal tea, mineral water with fresh lemon and good old filtered water
- move your body every day
- sleep well
- stay hydrated
- do something that brings you joy.

If you have issues with blood glucose regulation such as insulin resistance or diabetes, fatty liver, high cholesterol or any other condition that may require additional support, I can help you. Book a free 15 minute discovery call today.
