As a healthcare service, we are proud to care for a community made up of many cultures, faiths and belief systems.

World Religion Day (today) is an opportunity to recognise the richness that this diversity brings to our workplaces, our patients and their families.

We honour the traditions, practices and values that shape people’s lives and we reaffirm our commitment to providing care that is respectful, inclusive and culturally safe for everyone.

Thank you to our staff, volunteers, patients, visitors and community members who help create an environment where all beliefs are welcomed and understood.

Measles is a highly contagious viral illness that causes a skin rash and fever. It can lead to serious and potentially life-threatening complications.

Measles virus is very common in other parts of the world and people exposed overseas can spread the virus rapidly in Australia to people who are not immune.

You need two doses of the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine for protection.

If you haven’t had two doses, or you don’t know, get vaccinated.

🔥 Community Health Update: Fire & Heat Safety

Smoke from fires is still causing very poor air quality across much of Victoria. These conditions may continue for some time.
Go to our website for more detailed information of the messaging below: https://www.gh.org.au/gphu/

Protect your health:
🔹Stay indoors when it’s smoky
🔹Keep windows and doors closed; block gaps with wet towels
🔹Switch off air cons that pull air from outside
🔹Wearing a properly fitted N95 mask if you must go out can help when it is very smoky
🔹If you feel unwell, contact your doctor or call NURSE ON CALL: 1300 60 60 24
🔹In an emergency, always call Triple Zero 000.

Heat safety:
Recent extreme heat can still affect your body. Drink plenty of water, stay cool, avoid the hottest part of the day, and check in on family and friends.

Other important reminders:
🔹Power outages: Food that’s no longer cold must be eaten within 4 hours or thrown out
🔹Tank water: Ash can contaminate drinking water. If it looks, smells or tastes unusual, don’t drink it
🔹Mental health: Extreme weather and emergencies can take a toll. Free support is available across Victoria

Risks from respiratory and other infections:
Influenza A, COVID19, and RSV respiratory infections are being seen across our community at higher levels than usual.
🔹Stay home and rest if you have symptoms.
🔹Protect others by wearing a mask if you have to go out. People at high risk of severe impacts should make sure to keep their vaccinations up to date.

Potentially deadly Japanese encephalitis virus has been detected in mosquitoes in our region this summer.
🔹Protect yourself from mosquito bites by covering up with light clothing, avoiding being outside at dawn and dusk, and using a personal insect repellant containing picaridin.

✈️ Don’t catch measles on your holiday! Make sure you’re fully vaccinated against measles before you travel overseas. 2 doses are required for best, lifelong protection. 🛡️

If you’re not sure how many doses you’ve had, see your healthcare provider at least 6 weeks before your trip for a catch-up measles vaccination.

If you need two doses of the measles vaccine, these are given at least four weeks apart. It is also best to receive your final vaccine at least two weeks before you depart, to allow your body time to develop immunity. It is important to factor these timings into your travel plans.

Two doses of the measles vaccine are required for best, lifelong protection. Many adults have likely missed the second dose, putting themselves and others at risk. 🛡️

If you are over 60, you’re likely immune due to past widespread measles. But if you are aged 20-59 and haven’t had two doses or are not sure how many you’ve had, book in with an immunisation provider.

As we step into a new year, Dr Langsford is prioritising a routine kidney and metabolic health review. Over 2.5 million Australians have chronic kidney disease without knowing about it. Having your blood pressure checked, routine metabolic tests checked, and a 2-minute screen for chronic kidney disease can make an enormous difference to preserving kidney function.

As a physician, he believes in practising what he encourages, with regular check-ins to help catch small changes early and support long-term wellbeing.

Dr Langsford’s wish for the season is that everyone takes a moment to pause and reflect upon all that we've done well this year and that we can be thankful for. Of course, there will be some appropriate holiday cheer, but please don't overdo it, and as we enjoy each other's company, make sure we look out for each other too.

Going into the New Year, his broader wish is that our community feels supported to put their health and wellbeing first and to reach out for help before things become urgent.

“Remember that wellbeing is not just physical, but also mental and spiritual, and there are many services and people in our community who are committed to helping us care for each other in all these important aspects of our lives.”

Get to know Kellie, an Enrolled Nurse at Grampians Health Dimboola.

High access to affordable, healthy food options is Kellie’s wish for everyone for the holiday period, and a move towards low or no alcohol drinks when celebrating, as well as into the new year.

Her hope is that people take advantage of free Bowel Screening kits to prioritise their self-care. Her advice once the kit arrives, is not to set it aside, do it immediately. If you don’t get a screening kit, Kellie suggests getting a blood test to monitor your health.

Stuck for a gift idea? Treating a loved one to a regular relaxation massage has wellbeing benefits for you both.

When a little spare time is available over the break, Kellie will also be putting in a quick and easy phone call to book her annual skin check. She also encourages everyone to make staying active, no matter their age, their New Year’s resolution.

“Look after each other and remember those who may be experiencing any mental health challenges, to try to understand instead of judge. Reach out and get help.”

Introducing Hugh from Grampians Health Stawell’s Food Services Catering.

While needles aren’t high on Hugh’s list of favourite things, booking in for a blood test is certainly at the top of his ‘to do’ list, to prioritise good health.

His hope for others is that they take the time to check in on themselves, even if it is just small steps on their self-care journey. In particular, he encourages a focus on heart health and routine cancer screening, where early checks really can save lives.

Hugh is an advocate for treating yourself kindly, taking the time for a proper break, a holiday, or even a few days to rest, recharge and reset.

“Help build stronger habits for health and wellbeing in our community, continue to look out for one another - not just over the festive season, but all year round".

Thanks to the incredible generosity of Ballarat-based medical equipment manufacturer Alevo, we’ve received new fit-for-purpose treatment beds for our Horsham campus and Stawell Medical Centre.

These beds are already making a big difference—improving patient safety and comfort while making adjustments easier and safer for our clinicians. From wound care to pain management, they’re helping us deliver the best possible care every day.

“The bed in Horsham will get daily use in a variety of programs such as stomal therapy, continence care and pain management,” Grampians Health Complex Care manager Pauline Amos said.

Stawell Medical Centre manager Kelly Lee said the bed was being used for a variety of roles but it’s key purpose would be for patient comfort during wound care.

“The bed’s adjustable settings mean patients can sit or lie in the best possible comfort while nurses dressed their wounds,” Ms Lee said.
