It was fun to contribute to Trinity College Perth’s PINC Night that lined up with R U OK? Day 💛

I presented using Spoon Theory 🥄 — a powerful way to explain how energy and capacity can vary day to day — and how speech pathologists can play a role in supporting communication, self-advocacy, and participation for neurodivergent individuals.

It was a pleasure to join the panel with Tom from and Kim (Psychologist, CEWA), sharing perspectives on how our professions can work together to empower young people and their families. 🌟

✨I won Most Outstanding Speech Pathologist in the NDIS/Disability Sector in Australia at the Enablement Awards ✨

This was completely unexpected — I only went full time with my private practice in April, the imposter syndrome is very real ✨

To whoever nominated me — please come forward so I can thank you properly!

To my clients and families, thank you for your trust. To my friends and family, thank you for your support and belief in me.

And to my parents — thank you for letting me live at home while I work towards my goals.

✨🍾

Today, Hayley, Nicole, Kim and I met with our local MP Kate Chaney to raise our concerns and share our deep disappointment about the upcoming NDIS funding and travel changes rolling out next week.

We discussed the devastating impacts these changes will have on NDIS participant’s access to therapy, their livelihoods, and long-term health and education outcomes. We also highlighted how these changes strip Participants of choice and control; core principles of the NDIS.

We shared facts, figures, and real-world insights about how these changes will flow on to impact WA’s health and education systems.

Kate has written to Minister Jenny McCallister, expressed her intention to speak in Parliament, and is committed to advocating on this issue.

We’re so grateful for her time and support, and we remain fiercely committed to advocating for the rights and wellbeing of the individuals and families we support.

📍 Updated Catchment Area for New Referrals

Due to recent cuts to NDIS travel reimbursements, I’ve had to adjust our boundaries for accepting new clients.

🔸 I will now service suburbs within the boundary of:
➡️ North – Burns Beach / Kinross
➡️ South – City Beach / Wembley
➡️ East – Ballajura down to Bayswater / Bassendean
➡️ And back across to City Beach

🏡 All suburbs within this area are eligible for new referrals.

At this time, I’m unable to offer new services to families in the far northern suburbs such as Alkimos, Clarkson and Butler or out to Ellenbrook/Midland.

💛 If you’re already working with me, don’t worry – existing clients will continue receiving regular support as usual to avoid any additional stress or disruption.

Thank you for your understanding as we navigate these changes while staying committed to accessible, neurodiverse-affirming care.

Worried about your child’s expressive language? There are lots of small, everyday strategies that can help support their communication ✨

Here are some effective ways to build expressive language at home:

🔅Reduce questions — Instead of constant quizzing like “What’s this?”, try making comments instead. This removes pressure and creates a more natural language environment

🔆Show expectant waiting — Pause after you speak, look interested, and give your child time to respond. A little silence can go a long way in encouraging them to take a turn!

🔆Give options — Offering choices like “Do you want apple or banana?” gives your child a clear model of words they can use, while still giving them some control.

🔆Model grammatically correct language — Even if your child is only using single words, you can model full sentences. For example, if they say “car,” you might say, “Yes, it’s a red car driving fast!”

🔆Comment on their actions — Talk about what your child is doing, seeing, or feeling in the moment. This helps connect words with meaning and builds vocabulary in a natural way.

🔆Use repetition + daily routines — Repeating words and phrases during everyday tasks like mealtime, bath time, or getting dressed helps your child hear and learn language in meaningful context.

Remember: this is general advice. Every child is different, and there are many more strategies that can be tailored to your child’s unique needs after a full assessment 💛
