Yesterday I had a powerful session with a client where we delved deep into their feelings of overwhelm, which lead to freezing - particularly for a neurodivergent brain…which this beautiful client is blessed with. As we chatted, it was a good reminder to me, and perhaps it may be especially helpful for those fellow over-thinkers and neurodivergent folks out there.
🧠 When we go into overwhelm, we are in what’s called “big picture” thinking. That means, we’re looking at the whole scenario (it might be a task we need to complete, that involves a bit of work).
🧠 As we look at this whole scenario, it can seem too much…this is where the overthinking may start “OMG, I’ve got so much to get done, how am I going to do all this, why do I take on so much all the time, why can’t I be more organised, why didn’t I start working on this weeks ago, now I’m never going to have enough time to get it done, and then I’ll let so-and-so-down, and then they’ll see how disorganised I am and they’ll never ask me to help them again….”and so it continues…
🧠 And guess what happens - firstly your nervous system goes into sympathetic dominance (fight, flight, freeze), and then your brain jams up, like a cog that’s had something lodge in its teeth, it’s not processing, it’s just frozen. Welcome to overwhelm (AKA disregulation).
🧠 I’m sure every one one of you has been here, where no matter how hard you try, you cannot achieve anything, because you feel like you have no motivation, you try to do the work, but you keep getting “distracted”, you are constantly procrastinating and you achieve very little, if anything at all, and just end up doom scrolling or watching Netflix.
✨ THIS is where the tools I’ve learnt over the years and I’ve been passing onto clients come in so handy.
✨ Do you know what the first (and most difficult) tool to learn to use is?
R E S T!!
Taking a break.
✨ I’m not talking about sitting in front of the TV with your feet up. I’m talking about rest for your nervous system, your mind and your soul. The kind of rest that rejuvenates you and gets you back in the game and ready to get that task done (which is the next step…breaking things right down into bite-sized chunks).
✨ This is what we tapped into yesterday and this is what got this client from feeling like they were incapable of achieving anything to ticking several things off their “to-do” list and starting to change their patterns of thinking (it’s a process, and it’s doable).
If you’d like some support navigating through your own challenges and limiting beliefs, feel free to book out for a free 15 minute phone chat, and see if we’d be a good fit to work together 💕
