💙 Prostate Cancer Awareness Month – September 2024

This September, we raise awareness for prostate cancer, one of the most common cancers in men. Early detection is key—regular check-ups and understanding the signs can make all the difference.

If you notice any symptoms like difficulty urinating, pain in the pelvic area, or blood in urine, speak to your GP.

Your GP is here to support you with advice, testing, and treatment options.

Book an appointment to discuss prostate cancer screening and care with your GP.

🧠 Dementia Action Week, 15- 21 September

This year’s theme: “Act Now for a Dementia-Friendly Future”. This initiative aims to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and encourage community support for those living with dementia.

Over 433,000 Australians are living with dementia, a number expected to double in the coming decades. Despite this, many still perceive dementia as a normal part of aging. In reality, dementia is a brain condition that affects memory, thinking, and behavior, and is not a normal part of aging.

Your GP can play a key role in supporting those with dementia. From early diagnosis and medication management to coordinating care and supporting families, GPs ensure a comprehensive approach to managing dementia. They also provide referrals to specialists and support services to improve quality of life.

Act now—book an appointment today to discuss dementia care and support with your GP.

A conversation can change a life, and that includes a conversation with your GP.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, stressed, or unsure about your mental health, reaching out to your GP is a vital first step. Your GP will conduct a comprehensive mental health check, taking the time to listen and understand what you're going through.

They can provide tailored suggestions, whether it’s connecting you with mental health professionals, offering coping strategies, or discussing treatment options. Starting the conversation can open the door to the support and care you need to move forward.

Don’t wait—your GP is here to help you prioritise your mental wellbeing.

It’s Still Important to Get Your Flu Vaccine 💉

Flu season is still here, and annual vaccination is the best way to protect yourself and those around you. The flu vaccine is recommended for everyone aged 6 months and over, and especially for children, pregnant women, older adults, and those with certain health conditions.

Vaccination:
• Reduces your risk of catching or spreading the flu
• Lessens severity if you do get sick
• Protects vulnerable loved ones
• Helps you avoid missing work, school, or day care

Book your flu shot today and stay protected this season!

Today Dr Nicole Lewis hosted a special Women’s Health Event here at Strathalbyn Family Medical Centre in honour of Women's Health Week 2025.

We were delighted to see such a strong turnout, with many women coming together to learn, connect, and prioritise their health.

A big thank you to Trish Crouch from Strathalbyn Physiotherapy (pictured far left), who specialises in women’s health, for her support at the event, and to all who joined us in making the morning such a success.

It was a wonderful reminder of the importance of open conversation, access to care, and community support. 💙

Prioritise your Health this Women’s Health Week! 🌸

This week is all about putting you first. We believe in empowering women to take control of their health at every stage of life. This year’s theme is ‘Say Yes to You’.

Here are some key tips to help you prioritise your wellbeing:
• Every check-up matters: Understanding what's normal for your body starts with regular health checks. Stay up to date on your bowel health, breast health, and cervical screening with your GP.
• Take the lead: Be proactive and ask questions with your GP about your health. Take control by having informed conversations and understanding your body’s needs.
• Heart smart: Heart disease affects women in ways often overlooked. Let’s talk about it and take control of your heart health.
• Pain to power: Pain isn’t just “part of being a woman,” and you don’t have to push through it alone. Speak with our GPs about managing common pain conditions.
• Be kind to your mind: Mental health is just as important as physical health. Your GP can help you uncover ways to be resilient and empowered throughout life.

Book an appointment with your GP today and prioritise your health this Women’s Health Week and beyond.

🔴 Red Nose Day is a reminder of how important early education, awareness, and support are in helping to prevent the heartbreaking loss of a child.

We proudly support mission to reduce the risk of sudden infant deaths through safe sleeping education, research, and grief support.

There is no evidence that vaccinating your baby causes SIDS. In fact, studies show the opposite — vaccinations can help reduce the risk.

We encourage every parent to speak with their GP about safe sleep practices, vaccinations, developmental milestones, and any concerns they may have. Early guidance can make all the difference.
