Introducing Momoko Shimasaki to Activate Physio. Pilates

Physiotherapist Momoko is passionate about helping people maximise their quality of life through movement. Her interest in physiotherapy began as a young dancer when she witnessed the role of physio in the quick and thorough recovery of her injured peers.

Since then she has gone on to graduate from the University of Technology Sydney with a Bachelor of Sport and Exercise Science (2022) and a Master of Physiotherapy (2024).

Momoko is especially passionate about dance physiotherapy, with 4 years of dance teaching experience and 19 years of dance experience, including at a national level.

Pointe work should never be rushed.

Your dance teacher knows it is best to take each stage carefully to allow each dancer’s body time to adapt.

Your dance physio wants to assist with this process. It is extremely rare to say ' No, you can’t go en pointe'. Injury or lack of adequate ankle or knee range of movement may hold you back.

However!

Saying Yes, with great advice and safe dance practice is the key.

Pre-Pointe assessments guide dancers on how to build strength before stepping up.

Dance Specific Strength

Control through each joint’s range of movement

Painful Posterior Impingement when the ankle is pointing to full range, is a debilitating issue for ballet dancers. Susie has written an article for Dance Train mag. this month about posterior ankle impingement with a focus on ‘Os Trigonum’. Some ballet dancers have a little extra bone in the back of their ankle, that will increase the risk of posterior ankle impingement. As a Physio, Susie has worked with many dancers who have to diagnose what is causing posterior impingement in the back of their ankle. Some of these dancers go onto have an operation to remove this little bone, if they feel it will limit their career goals of going into professional level dance. The rehab process post op, is a carefully graded return to dance and full strength, under the guidance of the dance Physio and the surgeon. Part of the process is to examine and correct your foot and ankle’s alignment. It can be a rewarding and exciting process, with peaks and troughs in the journey back yo full dance performance. Susie’s aim is to support and empower you through the process, to pain free, full dance strength and mobility. Contact Susie for dance Physio appointments on 02 9518 5009 or email Susie@activatephysiopilates.au. We look forward to assisting you manage and cure your dance related injuries.

Susie had the pleasure of presenting at a seminar day, for a dance conference in Christchurch Aotearoa NZ.

The topic of Bone health and safe dance spans across age groups.

Safe dance concerns for young dancers and teachers, to prevent bone stress and build peak bone density by early 20’s.

Keep dancing and exercising safely into post Menopausal years! Some tips for doing this are: maintaining and improving good bone density, straight backed posture for lifting, avoiding loaded spinal flexion exercise and positions, balance for falls prevention and adequate nutrition.

This is an area of special interest for Susie! She received good feedback from participants.
