Recently we took part in Australia's Biggest Morning Tea to raise money for the Cancer Council. A great range of delicious treats (many homemade) were enjoyed by all!

As an aged care provider, we know how common cancer is. Supporting the Cancer Council is one small way we can contribute to ongoing research, care, and prevention.

It was a meaningful morning spent together, raising funds for a cause that touches so many in our community. 💚

This NAIDOC Week (6–13 July 2025), we proudly celebrate 50 years of honouring Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander voices, culture, and resilience.

The 2025 theme, “The Next Generation: Strength, Vision & Legacy,” calls on all Australians to reflect on the enduring legacies of our Elders while uplifting the young leaders shaping our shared future. This theme is a powerful reminder that the strength of our communities lies in the wisdom passed down through generations and the courage of youth to carry it forward. It celebrates the vision of those who fought for justice and recognition, and the legacy we continue to build together.

Let us honour the past, celebrate the present, and commit to a future led by the next generation, grounded in strength, guided by vision, and inspired by legacy!

💙 Understanding Grief in Dementia Care 💙

Grief in dementia is often invisible. It begins long before physical death and is compounded by the loss of shared memories, changed roles in relationships, and the gradual disappearance of the person as you once knew them.

This is sometimes referred to as ambiguous loss — a state of mourning someone who is still physically present but psychologically altered.

Unlike traditional bereavement, grief in dementia is often unspoken and unsupported. Carers may feel isolated, guilty for feeling sorrow, or unsure how to express their pain. They may also feel pressure to "stay strong" or focus solely on the person with dementia, ignoring their own emotional needs.

We found Episode 3 of the Hold the Moment podcast — Hold on to Joy: Managing Grief as a Carer — a powerful reminder that naming and honouring our grief can be a huge step toward healing.

In this episode, carers share their honest experiences of loss, and advice on how to navigate the emotional complexities of caring for someone living with dementia.

Global MND Day | 21 June

Today is Global Motor (MND) Day. Motor Neurone Disease, also known as ALS or Lou Gehrig's disease, is a progressive neurological condition that affects nerve cells controlling muscle movement.

On this MND Day, we strive to shed light on the challenges faced by those living with MND and their loved ones, while emphasising the importance of support and research.

Every day in Australia, two people are diagnosed with MND and two people die from the disease. Around 2,688 Australians are thought to be living with MND at any one time. The average life expectancy is 2.5 years post-diagnosis.

There is no cure, and care is focused on symptom management and quality of life.

Australians diagnosed under 65 may access the NDIS, while those over 65 rely on aged care services.

We acknowledge the resilience of the MND community and continue to advocate for greater awareness, timely access to services, and integrated care across the aged care and disability sectors.

Winter is here and it’s pretty chilly! So we wanted to share a reminder about the importance of keeping our elderly warm in the colder months.

As we age, our bodies become less efficient at regulating temperature, making older adults more vulnerable to the cold. Here are the key issues that could arise from too much cold exposure:

1. Higher Risk of Hypothermia
Older adults may not feel the cold as intensely, but their bodies can lose heat quickly. Even mildly cool temperatures indoors (below 18°C) can cause hypothermia in seniors, which can be life-threatening.

2. Slower Circulation
Aging slows down circulation, especially to the extremities. Cold weather can further restrict blood flow, increasing the risk of conditions like frostbite or aggravating issues such as arthritis.

3. Impact on the Immune System
Cold stress can weaken the immune response, making older adults more susceptible to colds, flu, and other infections.

4. Heart Health Concerns
Cold weather causes blood vessels to constrict, which can raise blood pressure and increase the risk of heart attacks and strokes — especially in those with pre-existing cardiovascular issues.

Tips to Stay Warm:

Keep indoor temperatures above 20°C
Dress in layers, including socks and hats
Use heated blankets or warm water bottles safely
Eat regular, warm meals to maintain energy
Stay active to boost circulation

If you have elderly loved ones, check in on them during colder months to help ensure they’re staying warm enough. 💛

Men’s Health Week | 10 to 16 June

Men’s Health Week is a reminder to check in with the men in our lives and ask: How are you, really?

Many men carry stress quietly. They are less likely to seek support but face higher rates of chronic illness, social isolation and su***de. In Australia, men live on average four years less than women and are four times more likely to die by su***de.

Research shows that two out of three men who are struggling do not feel confident asking for help.

This week (and always!) we are encouraging everyone to notice the signs that a man in their life might be doing it tough. A partner, father, colleague, friend or teammate. Take a moment to check in.

Some signs to look for:
• Becoming withdrawn
• Major life changes
• Mood swings or increased frustration
• Loss of interest in usual activities
• Ignoring physical health issues

Good health is about more than just treating symptoms. It is about connection, identity and support. Here's to better health and support for all our men out there!

Being approved for a Home Care Package is an important step toward receiving the support you need to live independently at home. While change can feel overwhelming, taking it one step at a time makes the process manageable and effective.

One of the most important first steps is selecting a Home Care Package provider who understands your needs and goals. There are several ways to explore your options:

1. Ask Your Assessor:
Your My Aged Care assessor can refer you directly to a provider. This is a straightforward option, and the provider will usually contact you to discuss next steps.

2. Use the My Aged Care “Find a Provider” Tool:
Visit the My Aged Care website and use the online search tool to find approved providers in your area. You’ll need your referral code, which your assessor can provide.
If you require assistance, you can call My Aged Care on 1800 200 422.

3. Personal Recommendations:
Speak with family, friends, or members of your community who have experience with Home Care Package providers. First-hand insights can help you make a more informed decision.

4. Independent Online Research:
Search online for providers in your region. Review their websites, services offered, and customer testimonials. Community forums and social media groups can also be valuable sources of feedback.

5. Comparison Websites:
Sites like AgedCareDecisions offer to match you with a provider based on your needs and preferences. Please note that these platforms may not include every available provider in your area.

Choosing the right provider is an important decision. Take your time, do your research, and don’t hesitate to ask questions along the way!
