AMTA's latest public statement covers why music therapy should remain a therapy support in the NDIS.

"Therapy supports provide NDIS participants with critical, often life-changing results, through goal-directed, individualised interventions. Music therapy is one of many allied health professions providing therapy supports in the NDIS, along with occupational therapy and speech pathology."

AMTA continues to ask that music therapy remain in the NDIS as a therapy support.

Because registered music therapists - just like our allied health colleagues - deliver therapy supports that ensure NDIS participants receive targeted, evidence-based interventions, with individualised and goal-directed interventions specifically designed to address the participant’s functional needs and goals.

Urgent: Keep Music Therapy in the NDIS!

I am deeply shocked and concerned about the NDIS' decision to remove music therapy from therapeutic supports from Monday 2nd December.

The Australian Music Therapy Association received information that the NDIS National Disability Insurance Scheme plans to exclude from their funded supports.

This decision has been made without consultation with our association, music therapy participants or their caregivers.

This is a huge blow to our industry and, more importantly, to the thousands of individuals who rely on music therapy for essential support. Registered Music Therapists within the NDIS work with a diverse range of individuals, including neurodiverse children and adults, people with mental health needs, developmental disabilities, chronic pain, dementia, and acquired brain injury, plus many, many more.

If you can help please sign this petition and leave a comment about why music therapy is important to you, to someone you know, or to our community.

A link to the statement is included in the comments.

It reads “The more emotionally charged the musical experience, the more likely a strong memory is connected to it… the next time there is a similar experience, such as hearing the song again, an instantaneous response, both conscious and subconscious, is drawn from the previous experience” (Tomaino, 2014)

We communicate in a number of ways in music therapy sessions, including Auslan (Australian Sign Language). Incorporating Auslan into our favourite songs is a fun way to learn and achieve our therapeutic goals. In this video, Jodie is singing and signing ‘Five Little Ducks’ 🎶 ⭐️

We love the gathering drum in music therapy sessions. Under the drum is a fun place to hide animals, plus it also promotes many goals. Developing bilateral beating assists many daily living tasks including dressing and tying shoes, fine motor activities like doing up buttons, visual motor tasks such as drawing, and gross motor activities including walking 🤩 🎶 🥁
