🚴‍♂️Our Engineering Manager, Colin, will soon be taking part in the Breaths and Beats Charity Bike Ride, completing the 60km ride around South Perth.

For Colin, this event is deeply personal. Cycling has always been a big part of his life – from riding to school and his first job, to now cycling 20km each way to work. But most importantly, Colin is riding because of the impact that heart and lung disease has had on his family.

He said that sadly, his cousin has been diagnosed with Pulmonary Fibrosis, and his dad passed away from a heart condition.

“My lung capacity and functionality allow me to enjoy activities like running, cycling, playing tennis and SCUBA diving without any concerns. Unfortunately, there are lots of people can’t physically do this,” he said.

“I’m pleased to be able to support vital research that will benefit people living with heart and lung conditions and hopefully improve their quality of life.”

Colin’s commitment to this cause is especially meaningful for us as a hospital, given our proud reputation as a leading provider of cardiac and respiratory care.

Our Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) is known for its expert care and compassionate team - less visible is the quiet dedication of several caregivers who, alongside their clinical roles, are also pursuing further study through the University of Tasmania. It is an experience reshaping not only their own careers, but also the way the team delivers care to its tiniest patients.

“When more of us are engaged in ongoing education, we collectively raise the standard of care,” Clinical Nurse Lincy Thomas said.

“It also cultivates a culture of learning, innovation, and shared responsibility for quality outcomes.”

🌟 Today is National Anaesthesia Day 🌟.

On this day in 1846, the first successful public demonstration of ether anaesthesia took place at Massachusetts General Hospital. This groundbreaking moment changed medicine forever, making surgery safer and far less painful for patients.

At St John of God Subiaco Hospital, we’re proud to continue that legacy of care. Our anaesthetists, anaesthetic technicians, and the many caregivers who support patients in our theatres and on our wards work together to:

🧡 Keep patients safe before, during and after surgery
🧡 Manage pain and ensure comfort
🧡 Provide reassurance during what can feel like a daunting experience

This year’s theme, “You’re in safe hands,” reflects the skill, compassion and vigilance of our anaesthetic team members, ensuring every patient feels supported and cared for when they need it most.

Pictured here are just a few members of our very large anaesthetic team, including Anaesthetics Head of Department Dr Rob Storer, and Obstetric Anaesthetics Head of Department Dr Celine Baber.

A beautiful reminder of why every moment matters. 💙

When our Cardiac Ward Manager, Claudia, found herself stranded on the side of the road after her car broke down, help came from an unexpected and very special place.

A passing tow truck driver noticed her uniform and stopped to assist. It turned out he had been a patient on our cardiac ward some time ago and still remembered the compassionate care he received from Claudia and her team. As his way of saying thank you, he insisted on towing her car for free. 💫

This small but powerful act of kindness reminded Claudia just how meaningful her work truly is. Every day, she and her colleagues help people return to their families and their lives with renewed purpose and hope – and stories like this show just how impactful their care is.
