New findings published in JAMA Surgery reveal that bariatric surgery offers more sustained weight loss, better diabetes control, and improved long-term survival compared to GLP-1 weight-loss medications.
While injections are effective only as long as they’re taken, surgery brings lasting hormonal and metabolic changes that support long-term health.

Renting vs. Owning Your Weight Loss

There was significant coverage in The West Australian yesterday, highlighting the “poor return” seen with weight-loss injections. A major new study has found that when these medications are stopped, weight regain occurs up to four times faster than after stopping a diet. In many cases, people return to their starting weight within 18 months to two years.

Why does this happen?

Because these medications work a lot like renting your weight loss. The benefits continue only as long as the weekly injections do. Once they stop, appetite signals return—often stronger than before.

Bariatric surgery works differently. It’s more like owning your weight loss. Surgery creates lasting changes to gut hormones and metabolism, supporting sustained weight loss without the need for ongoing prescriptions or reliance on willpower alone. For those frustrated by the cycle of short-term fixes and long-term regain, it may be time to consider solutions designed for durability.

As reported in The West Australian, Dr. Ravi Rao continues to support science-backed bariatric surgery for long-term weight loss, improved metabolic health, and cost efficiency.
