🎉 Congratulations to Dr Pramod Dorishetty! 🎉

Dr Dorishetty has been awarded an Innovation Fellowship by the Future Health Research and Innovation (FHRI) Fund, supported by the Western Australian Department of Health, for his research on the fabrication of silk-based wound packing materials for ENT applications. 🧵👂

His project aims to develop a natural, non-invasive silk treatment for chronic suppurative otitis media (CSOM)—a condition that can cause hearing loss and is especially prevalent in remote and Aboriginal communities.

💬 “This funding will enable us to bring healthcare to remote locations and reduce hearing loss by targeting chronic suppurative otitis media at its early onset.” – Dr Dorishetty

National Reconciliation Week is a time for all Australians to reflect on our shared history, celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and achievements, and consider how we can each contribute to reconciliation.
This year’s theme, Bridging Now to Next, encourages us to acknowledge the past, engage with the present, and work together to build a more united, respectful future. It’s a time to learn, to listen, and to take meaningful action; together.

At Ear Science Institute Australia, we're proud to have worked alongside Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service (PAMS) for over a decade to deliver the Healthy Hearing Outback Program. This initiative provides essential audiology and ENT services to the Martu and Nyiyaparli communities in Newman and the Western Desert, helping to detect and treat ear conditions that can significantly impact health and wellbeing.

In recent years, the program has expanded to include a stronger focus on community engagement, health promotion, telehealth, and building local workforce capability, ensuring sustainable care that meets the needs of the community.

This program is made possible with the support of our partners: Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service , BHP Mineral Resources, and Rural Health West’s Outreach program, funded by the Australian Government Department of Health.

Together, we're bridging the gap in hearing health outcomes for Aboriginal communities.

Thanks to generous support of BHP, our Healthy Hearing Outback team at Ear Science Institute Australia has received vital ear health equipment installed across Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service (PAMS) clinics in Newman, Jigalong, Parnngurr, Punmu and Kunawarritji. 👂

This equipment includes, an Ambu Nasolaryngoscope, 2 ZEISS Group Opmi Pico Microscopes, 5 VorOtek Micro-Suction units and a Vorotek Binocular scope. This enables us to offer more comprehensive ear and hearing care services on Country, closer to home for the Martu and Nyiyaparli people.

To ensure the equipment is used to its full potential, our Healthy Hearing Outback team held a dedicated training session at our Subiaco headquarters to upskill PAMS clinicians. More training sessions are planned to build local capacity and provide sustainable, community-led care.

We're proud to take this leap forward with our partners; Puntukurnu Aboriginal Medical Service, BHP, Mineral Resources, and Rural Health West's Outreach program, funded by The Australian Government Department of Health. 💛

A huge thank you to Telethon7 Perth for their generous donation of our brand new CYTENA CELLCYTE X live cell and spheroid imaging system! Today was an exciting milestone at the Ear Science lab, as we unboxed this incredible piece of technology from BioTools Pty Ltd.

The CELLCYTE X will support our Hearing Therapeutics Team to fast track their research in developing drug therapies to tackle childhood hearing loss, in Western Australia.

👂 In Western Australia alone, over 25,000 children are affected by conditions such as Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media, the leading cause of hearing loss in kids.
🧬 Additionally, 10% of all children with hearing loss in Western Australia are diagnosed with Usher syndrome, a genetic condition that impacts both hearing and vision.

This powerful technology will allow us to rapidly screen and test potential treatments, bringing us one step closer to changing the lives of those affected by conditions like Chronic Suppurative Otitis Media and Usher syndrome.

Thanks to this new equipment, we’re entering an exciting new phase in our research – one that brings hope to children and families across Western Australia 💡🔬

🌹 Lest We Forget. 🌹

Today, on ANZAC Day, we pause to honour and remember those who have served—and continue to serve—our country. Their sacrifice, courage, and commitment will never be forgotten.

As we commemorate their service, we also acknowledge the ongoing health challenges many veterans face—some of which are less visible, like hearing loss and tinnitus.

Mike Forster, a seven-year RAAF veteran based mainly at RAAF Butterworth, Malaysia, suffered high-frequency hearing loss from prolonged exposure to jet noise. He shared:
"For years, I worked around my hearing loss—until it began affecting my work, home, and social life. Lions Hearing changed everything with their careful support and by arranging a ‘Roger’ remote microphone system through DVA. Adjusting to hearing aids wasn’t easy at first, but the difference has been life-changing. I’m truly grateful—thank you, Lions Hearing!"

Members of the Australian Defence Force are frequently exposed to high-level noise during training and active service, putting them at significantly higher risk of hearing damage. Research shows that noise-induced damage can occur even when a standard audiogram appears normal—a condition known as hidden hearing loss. This reduces speech clarity and can contribute to the onset of tinnitus.

Our clinicians and researchers have found that for many veterans, like Mike, it is often tinnitus—not just hearing loss—that has the greatest impact on daily life and wellbeing.

At Lions Hearing Clinics, we are committed to improving the lives of those with ear and hearing conditions. On this day of remembrance, we also reaffirm our dedication to the veteran community.

Eligible DVA clients can access fully subsidised hearing tests through the Hearing Services Program, along with support for hearing devices if required.

To all who have served—we thank you. We see you. And we are here to support you.

🎉 We are proud to have had Adjunct Associate Professor Elaine Wong, Head of Hearing Therapeutics, and audiologist Lucy Mitchell represent our team at the 2025 Australasian Newborn Hearing Screening (ANHS) Conference in Canberra.

The conference highlighted the essential role of hearing screenings for newborns—not only for identifying hearing loss but also as a vital tool for early detection and intervention. It also reinforced the importance of maintaining and continuously improving the standards of coverage and of quality in the delivery of screening and associated services around Australasia.

It was a fantastic opportunity to connect with our peers as we launch our national initiative, The Aussie Ear Bank—bringing together researchers, clinicians and scientists from around the country to explore the role genes play in hereditary hearing loss in children.

Additionally, our Healthy Hearing Outback program; built on over a decade of work with Martu and Nyiyaparli communities in the Pilbara, supporting children and their families with ear health service; had the opportunity to gain valuable insights and research findings from presenters at this conference. 👏💡
