Today is Indigenous Literacy Day – a celebration of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander stories, cultures and language. This year’s theme ‘Strength In Our Stories: For Now & Future Generations’, highlights the diversity of storytelling and how it keeps communities strong now and into the future. There are many ways to tell a story. The most recent Census data shows 10,715 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples worked as educators, translators, interpreters, historians, librarians and in creative jobs in 2021.

Note: Includes people aged 15 years and over. Includes school and tertiary education teachers, other education professionals, translators, interpreters, historians, librarians, library assistants and technicians, arts and media professionals, fashion, industrial and jewellery designers, graphic and web designers and illustrators.

In support of reconciliation, the ABS acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander days of significance as part of our commitment to increasing awareness and understanding of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples histories, cultures and achievements.

This post from Australian Neurodivergent Parents Association - ANPA has a useful breakdown of what a therapist's hourly fee entails, and why we charge the rates we do. Small businesses are struggling, and private practices with passionate and experienced staff are trying to work out how they can continue to provide services to their local communities.🩵

As the year comes to a close, I want to share some of my big highlights of 2023.

1. I absolutely loved being on a panel at the Speech Pathology Australia on Speech Sound Disorders; it was facilitated by the amazing who is so generous with her time and her energy!
2. This year I got to travel a fair bit for work, uni, and leisure. I’m so grateful for the places and people I saw! ✈️
3. I completed my Confirmation milestone for my research degree and am officially on the path to a PhD 🎓
4. I was featured in the “Speak Out” publication by Speech Pathology Australia for my animal assisted therapy work with Poppy. 🐶
5. I got to share a lot of my ideas, knowledge and favourite therapy toys with all of you here! 💕

There were many more moments, because it’s been a very eventful year. But these are my top 5 as a Speech Language Pathologist in Private Practice!

I want to thank all the clients, caregivers and colleagues who have supported our small business this past year. 💕💕💕

Yesterday I posted on the blog about gifts for children, and today I'm posting gift ideas for the Speech Pathologists in your life! You might even get some ideas for the non-SLPs you know :)

Are you a last minute gift shopper? Here are some options for the Speech Language Pathologists (SLPs) in your life - or for SLPs to add to your list as a request from the SLP lovers in your life :) I'm conscious of being a bit of a consumerist, and in our capitalistic society I still want to leave r...

Yesterday, I successfully completed my Confirmation Milestone for my MPhil and was approved for an upgrade to a PhD for my research on the assessment and analysis of personal narratives in school-age children. I couldn’t have done it without my amazingly supportive and knowledgeable HDR supervisors: Associate Professor Marleen Westerveld (.slp) and Dr Stephanie Malone, pictured here with me. Here’s to many more years ahead of track changes and forgetting to send the calendar invite to the meeting. (Oh, and radical, child-centred research of course!)
I was also SO lucky to have Suze Leitão () as the Independent Assessor: so knowledgeable and thoughtful and had obviously put time and effort into giving me feedback. What a thrilling day! 🌸

DLD affects approximately two students in every classroom - but it is NOT caused by speaking more than one language. Read more info below!

Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) is not caused by speaking more than one language. However we are likely to notice that the DLD impacts on all languages a person with DLD speaks.

Removing a language does not necessarily make it easier, and it might limit a person with DLD's future opportunities. People with DLD have the same right to learn the languages that others in their community speak.

Understanding the connections between languages and how we can support multilingualism is important but not always straightforward. That is why we have renowned expert Dr Elizabeth Pena delivering this year's Dorothy Bishop lecture on October 9th.
