LIP ASYMMETRY
There are several causes of lip asymmetry that we as clinicians need to navigate. Some of these can be rectified with volume replacement (or other prescription options), whilst others are more difficult to correct.
Understanding a pre-existing asymmetrical anatomy can help you as a patient to identify your goals and treatment expectations.
Natural muscle dominance: Stronger pull of facial muscles on one side can lift or contract the lip unevenly.
Age-related volume loss: Uneven collagen, fat, and elasticity changes can make one side appear thinner or lower.
Dental or skeletal differences: Bite alignment and jaw position influence lip contour and symmetry.
Scarring or previous trauma: Injury or scar tissue can distort lip texture and shape.
Pigmentation changes: Uneven melanin distribution, sun exposure, or post inflammatory pigmentation can create visual asymmetry, even when lip volume is balanced.
Uneven filler placement: Previous over, or under-filling can alter shape and projection.
Whilst we aim to optimise balance and symmetry, we can only utilise the clinical tools so far.
A common combination with non-surgical lip enhancement includes lip blush tattoo. This provides another mechanism of balancing the tissue without over filling or over treating with other prescription medication.
