In a world where emotions can run high and tensions often flare, it's essential to pause and consider the power of response over reaction. Reacting impulsively might feel instinctual, but taking a moment to respond thoughtfully can lead to incredible benefits both personally and in our interactions with others.

Here are some reasons why responding is the ultimate game-changer:

1๏ธโƒฃ Promotes Clarity and Understanding: Reacting in the heat of the moment can cloud our judgment and lead to misunderstandings. By taking a moment to respond, we can gather our thoughts, process information more effectively, and communicate with clarity. This promotes better understanding and reduces the risk of conflict.

2๏ธโƒฃ Strengthens Relationships: Whether it's in personal or professional relationships, responding allows us to express ourselves in a way that is respectful and considerate of others' feelings. Recently, I stumbled upon the beautiful Japanese phrase "Makeru ga kachi," which translates to "There is value in defeat" or "Even in loss, there is something to be gained." I've been reflecting on this concept as a guiding light during challenging life phases, and I wanted to share this little story to illustrate why I really like it.

An example of "Makeru ga kachi" is the story of Starbucks and its founder, Howard Schultz. In the early 1980s, Schultz joined Starbucks as the director of retail operations and marketing. During a trip to Italy, he was inspired by the Italian coffeehouse culture and envisioned transforming Starbucks into a place where people could enjoy high-quality coffee and a sense of community.

Schultz presented this idea to the Starbucks owners, but they were hesitant to change their focus from selling coffee beans and equipment.
Undeterred by the initial rejection, Schultz left Starbucks and founded his own coffeehouse chain called Il Giornale, which embraced the Italian coffeehouse concept.

In 1987, Schultz had the opportunity to buy Starbucks from its original owners. He acquired the company, implemented his vision, and rebranded all Il Giornale stores as Starbucks outlets.

Schultz's determination to pursue his vision, despite facing rejection, led to the transformation of Starbucks into a global coffeehouse chain. His ability to learn from setbacks and turn his ideas into reality demonstrates the resilience and innovation associated with the philosophy of "Makeru ga kachi."

To me this story serves as an inspiring example of how setbacks can pave the way for success when met with determination and a positive mindset.

When was the last time you were wrong?

What about those people who are always right โ€“ these smarty pants, know-it-alls, and arrogant backseat drivers? You try to better them, argue with them, but they just donโ€™t listen โ€“ or even worse, turn your own point around against you?

Lucky us, we are different โ€“ or are we?

Take a moment and think about it โ€“ when was the last time you were wrong and you admitted it?

When was the last time you said: you are right โ€“ I was wrong?

Sometimes it is exactly that point in your life when you fear admitting you have done something wrong. Parents know that it is hard to get your child to admit that they have done something wrong โ€“ shouldnโ€™t we be better about accepting that something was amiss?

Why is it so hard to say โ€“ you are right?

Do we try to cover our own deceitful image of ourselves?
Camouflaging our insecurities and self-doubt?

By acting like you are always right โ€“ do you put on blinkers to avoid looking at your own faults and the uncomfortable truth about our worldview?

Next time you come across such a situation โ€“ ask yourself: what do I try to avoid here? Where is my insecurity and how can I overcome it?

You can become a better person by admitting every now and then that you were mistaken. It is easier than you think, less stressful and you can live a happier, healthier life.

Two kids are fighting over a large, juice-laden orange. Each one wants it, and neither is willing to give it up. Their father, frustrated with the bickering, comes over and cuts the orange, giving each child half. Both children erupt into tears. Surprised, the father asks why.

The first child explains that she had wanted to make an orange cake. This required the zest of a whole orange. Her sister explains that she wanted to make orange juice. She needed a whole orange to get enough juice.

While it is a simplistic story, it does illustrate how a win-win solution might have been reached. It is why it is so important to come to an understanding of what one needs out of the proverbial orange and to think hard about what others might need.

A cycle breaker is an individual within a family unit who decides that itโ€™s time to put a stop to a harmful family pattern. The cycle breaker recognizes that some family habits are causing pain or grief, and they realize that they have the power to end the cycle. They commit to self-improvement so that they can enjoy their own life free from the harmful patterns and so that they can be the best possible parent to their own children.

Unfortunately, a cycle breaker often runs into conflict with their family. The parents or other family members might feel uncomfortable as they watch the cycle breaker overcome the generational cycles that continue to plague them. Sometimes, they think the cycle breaker has betrayed the family by refusing to partake in the same habits, beliefs, or behaviour. Despite this tension, though, the cycle breaker is committed to improving themselves and their future.

If you're ready to be a cycle breaker, congrats! Deciding to make this change is brave, but you deserve to feel free and heal from past trauma. Therapy offers a safe, nonjudgmental place to address family problems and rediscover your identity. You can change family patterns, and you aren't doomed to live a life that doesn't feel authentic to you.

New Yearโ€™s Resolutions for Your Mental Health and Wellbeing

We always want to be our best โ€“ Counselling and Life Coaching is an excellent way of making sure that we become just that. You donโ€™t have to have problems to get something out of a counselling session.

In fact, its many benefits can all contribute to positivity, well-being, and a great outlook in life. This coming year, why not make a resolution to try out Counselling or Life Coaching? Itโ€™s a broad field that has something for everyone, after all.

The word โ€œcounsellingโ€ used to have a certain connotation in the past. People used to associate counselling, psychology and psychiatry with stigma. These included; illness, weakness, negativity.

Such negative associations have largely disappeared, and counselling is now viewed in a more positive light.

The vast majority of the public now views counselling as something normal and for a good reason. Undergoing counselling shows the desire to be better, to do better, and the need to live more positively.

This makes counselling a great idea for people looking to get a good jump on the new year, and commit to wellness for the coming year โ€“ and beyond.

The meaning of every event depends on how we frame it. When

responses and behaviors.

Reframing, in the therapeutic sense, is about looking at a situation, thought, or feeling from another angle. Therapists are really good at this because our goal is to be supportive and empathetic to you and your concerns, but also help you work through issues.

When we take on your challenges, whatever they may be, and offer
another perspective, we are โ€œreframing.โ€

The emotions that you feel, or thoughts that you think, are often rooted in old patterns that no longer serve you. By reframing a situation, or taking on a new perspective, you can help adjust those patterns (and break them over time) leaving you feeling healthier and more in control of your own mind.
