Sleep… many things contribute to a poor nights sleep, or getting one off to sleep, but let’s focus on the main neurotransmitter involved… MELATONIN.
🧠There’s actually 2 involved: MELATONIN makes you fall asleep, and GABA makes you stay asleep. Both are made from essential amino acids (which is a protein) and you MUST get them from food- your body can’t make them if you don’t eat them!
For Melatonin you need the amino acid Tryptophan which is in turkey, edam cheese, pumpkin seeds, pork, chicken, whiting, navy beans, cashew nuts, parmesan cheese and seaweed.
For Gaba, the amino is Glutamic Acid which is in almonds, goat, gelatin, cheddar cheese, flathead, uncooked oats, eggs, walnuts, tuna and chicken.
Keep in mind Magnesium, Zinc and B vitamins are involved in this process so a deficiency in these will affect sleep too.
🌞LIGHT: When the sun goes down, our eyes notice the shift, and takes SERATONIN (also made from the above proteins) and turns it into Melatonin. Too much light stops this, and personally, I don’t believe it is a coincidence that the increase in melatonin prescriptions increased by 245% in kids in 2014 when you consider how smart phones, tablets, and LCD TVs are used at night.
Yes, you can put the blue light filter on your screen, or where the blocking glasses, but you can also get bulbs and night lights for your whole home too. LED downlights emit a significant amount of blue light! Blockbluelight.com.au is where to buy them
💦FLOURIDE in my opinion does not belong in our water as it does not go only to your teeth, but it is absorbed by other soft tissue in the body including, the Pineal gland which is where Melatonin is produced. Fluoride has been shown to contribute to calcification of the Pineal gland resulting in less Melatonin production. There are some affordable water jugs that remove fluoride and other contaminants.
This is just Melatonin- many other things that can contribute! To give you some things to consider, look into magnesium glycinate, passion flower, Californian poppy, ziziphus, and reishi. These can help bring on the “calm” and find them helpful with my patients.
So hopefully, sweet dreams 😴
