As we move through June, Iโ€™m reflecting on the diversity and individuality that make up our beautiful community... especially during Pride Month and this yearโ€™s theme, ๐˜›๐˜ฉ๐˜ฆ ๐˜๐˜ณ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฆ๐˜ฅ๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ ๐˜ฐ๐˜ง ๐˜๐˜ข๐˜ฃ๐˜ณ๐˜ช๐˜ค. Just as every fabric has its own texture, colour and story, so too does every personโ€™s health journey.

For many, especially those in the LGBTQIA+ community, navigating health and nutrition can feel like threading a needle in a world that isnโ€™t always welcoming. At Femme Nutrition Australia, I want you to know youโ€™re seen, valued and always welcome... just as you are.

Whether youโ€™re experiencing perimenopause, hormonal changes or simply seeking a more compassionate approach to your wellbeing, your story matters. Nutrition isnโ€™t about fitting into someone elseโ€™s pattern... itโ€™s about weaving together the habits, foods and routines that help you feel most at home in your own skin.

If youโ€™ve ever felt excluded or misunderstood in a health care setting, youโ€™re not alone. My mission is to create a safe, inclusive space where you can explore your health, ask questions and receive support thatโ€™s truly customised to you.

Letโ€™s celebrate the unique fabric of our community this month and always. You belong here.

This week is Natural Medicine Week (19โ€“25 May), a lovely reminder of the many ways we can support our health nutritionallyโ€ฆ especially during perimenopause.

Thereโ€™s no quick fix when it comes to perimenopause or nutrition โ€ฆ no matter what the internet says! Itโ€™s easy to wish for a magic food or a month of meditation to make symptoms vanish. Trust me, Iโ€™ve tried! But real change takes time, patience, and a bit of self compassion.

Every womanโ€™s journey through perimenopause is unique, and what works wonders for one person might not be right for another. The small, sustainable choices you make each day add up over time โ€ฆ so be gentle with yourself and remember youโ€™re not alone in this.

Have you noticed your own symptoms changing over time, or found something that helps you feel more like yourself? Iโ€™d love to hear your thoughts below.

Signs and Symptoms of Perimenopause - Perimenopause is a natural phase of life, but the symptoms can feel anything but predictable. As oestrogen and progesterone fluctuate, you might notice changes in your body, mood and overall well-being.

Some common symptoms include:
โ€ข Irregular periods
โ€ข Hot flashes or cold chills
โ€ข Mood changes, anxiety or irritability
โ€ข Sleep disturbances or insomnia
โ€ข Changes in libido
โ€ข Weight changes
โ€ข Hair loss or dry skin

Everyoneโ€™s experience is unique and symptoms can vary widely. The most important thing to remember is that your experience is valid and you donโ€™t have to navigate this phase alone.

๐Ÿ’ก Stay tuned for more insights into managing perimenopause with personalised nutrition, mindset support and lifestyle changes.

๐ŸŒฌ๏ธ Breathing, Sleep and Perimenopause ๐ŸŒ™

In the whirlwind of perimenopause, it can feel like your body is working against you. But did you know that something as simple as breathing can help you regain control and support your body through this transition?

Why does breathing matter?

During perimenopause, sleep is vital for regulating cortisol, balancing mood, and even managing blood sugar levels โ€“ all of which play a role in reducing symptoms like night sweats, anxiety and irritability. But when sleep is disrupted, it can create a vicious cycle of hormonal imbalance.

By practising slow, nasal breathing, you can calm your nervous system, balance oxygen levels, and trigger your bodyโ€™s relaxation response. This can lead to deeper, restorative sleep and help you wake up feeling refreshed rather than groggy.

โœจ Hereโ€™s a quick breathing exercise to try before bed:

1๏ธโƒฃ Sit comfortably with your mouth closed.

2๏ธโƒฃ Inhale gently through your nose for 5 seconds.

3๏ธโƒฃ Exhale slowly through your nose for 6 seconds.

4๏ธโƒฃ Hold your breath for 2 seconds (or adjust to what feels comfortable).

5๏ธโƒฃ Breathe normally for 1 minute, then repeat for 5โ€“10 minutes.

This is a practice, so take your time and listen to your body. Itโ€™s just one tool in a holistic approach to managing perimenopause.

At Femme Nutrition Australia, I combine evidence-based nutrition, targeted supplements, functional testing and holistic practices like these breathing techniques to help you feel empowered and in control of your health.

You may have seen my Reel on Facebook about watching an interview with Emma Watkins and Drew Barrymoreโ€ฆ March is Endometriosis Awareness Month... It made me reflect on how women experiencing perimenopause while managing endometriosis often feel as though they are navigating a maze of symptoms and challenges.

Both conditions involve hormonal changes that can impact your body in different ways. Endometriosis often brings pain, inflammation and heavy periods while perimenopause can add symptoms like irregular cycles, mood swings and disrupted sleep. Together, they can feel overwhelming and isolating.

But hereโ€™s the thing... you donโ€™t have to face it alone. Understanding how these conditions overlap is the first step to finding relief.

By addressing the root causes of your symptoms and supporting your body with the right tools, itโ€™s possible to feel more balanced, energised and in control of your health.

Whether itโ€™s through nutrition, lifestyle changes or understanding how your hormones are working together... there are ways to support your body and feel like yourself again.

If youโ€™re ready to take the next step and book a consultation, please use the link here to secure your spot: https://app.simpleclinic.net/public/diary/index/y47 . Together, we can explore how to support your health, address your unique needs and help you feel more balanced and in control.

Spotting a fad diet can be difficult and it confuses us as to what to believe when it comes to health.

In our world, itโ€™s easy to get swept up by the latest diet craze promising miracles. But letโ€™s be real, your body and your health deserve more than a quick fix. Here's how to spot a fad diet and why they donโ€™t align with our Femme Philosophy (you can find the Femme Philosophy on my website under www.femmenutrition.au/about).

If you come across advertising promising quick results in anything, especially losing weight, then you have to think about plans after the diet is finished? โ€œIs this diet sustainable to keep eating for the rest of my life?โ€ If not, then itโ€™s most likely an unhealthy gimmick. Health is about lifelong changes.

You will also see at the end of the advertisement, they are selling a product or supplement. There is usually a product /subscription being pushed at the centre of the diet, thatโ€™s a red flag. True wellness comes from adding in nutrient dense wholefoods.

Other adverts or packaging you may see โ€œFat freeโ€ or โ€œLow calorieโ€... Well, what else are they adding? A chemical chaos, or, Iโ€™ve heard others call it a โ€œchemical sh*t stormโ€ ๐Ÿ™‚ If the product has an ingredients list as long as the Nile, thatโ€™s a good reason to step away from the synthetics and preservatives (aka, toxins!). Being healthy includes nourishing foods for your body to detoxify these types of toxins.

When you see the promise that the diet is for everybody, that just isnโ€™t possible as our bodies are individual with individual needs. Any plan that promises results with just one thing, like just cut carbs, just reduce calories, just exercise... nuh aah, that will throw your health out of balance. Your health is multi dimensional! Reducing stress, relaxing, moving, adding nutrition and sleep ALL play a role.

I want to talk more about fad diet restrictions, they often eliminate entire food groups or significantly restrict calories, setting you up for nutrient deficiencies, cravings and burnout. When you cut something out, itโ€™s like your brain wants it more! Balanced nutrition doesnโ€™t have to be extreme measures, itโ€™s a gradual step by step process.

If a diet is affecting your hunger levels, dysregulating your mood, cuts out essential macros and is restrictive, then those are signs to ditch the diet! What you can try is:
โ€ข Increase whole & unprocessed foods
โ€ข Balance your macronutrients
โ€ข Eat mindfully
โ€ข Focus on long-term wellness
โ€ข Seek individual guidance

The Femme Philosophy is about empowering and supporting women with knowledge, balance and self-love โ€ฆ because real health is important. Itโ€™s about embracing nourishing wholefoods, listening to your body and building sustainable habits for life.

Letโ€™s raise the barโ€ฆ our well-being is too precious to be left to passing trends.

Approximately 380,000 women in Australia are suffering from perimenopause symptoms, some women may not even realise their symptoms are from perimenopause and think theyโ€™re just having a bad day.

Well, Iโ€™m here to tell you sleep disturbance, random irritability, โ€œwired but tiredโ€, brain fog and joint pain can be related to perimenopause symptoms. Perimenopause is the 10 year lead up to menopause and rarely, some women can experience this for up to 20 years.

A woman knows her own body BETTER than anyone elseโ€ฆ if you know there is something happening thatโ€™s not your usual normโ€ฆ then letโ€™s talk.

A FREE 30 minute Hormone Review can help you dive in a little deeper to help figure out what is going on. Book in today and get a free set of steak knivesโ€ฆ just kidding ๐Ÿคฃโ€ฆ but you will get an extra friendly smile from someone who understands what youโ€™re going throughโ€ฆ book in via this link:
