As October wraps up, we close Mental Health Awareness Month in Australia with one final reminder to prioritise your mental health.

This week’s reminder: Reach Out.

Therapy isn’t about being broken — it’s about having a space to understand yourself better, manage stress, and build healthier ways to cope.

It’s a chance to talk through what’s weighing you down, make sense of your thoughts, and reconnect with what matters most.

Prioritising your mental health through therapy can help you feel lighter, clearer, and more in control of your life.

If you’ve been thinking about getting support, there’s no better time to start. Learn more at www.mindfulmen.com.au

At Mindful Men, we do Mental Health Social Work!

Accredited Mental Health Social Workers (AMHSWs) support people with a range of challenges - including mental illness, trauma, disability, relationships, addiction, loneliness, stress and parenting (just to name a few).

We combine therapeutic skills with practical help — addressing your emotions and your everyday functioning.

We understand how life, relationships, identity and systems can impact mental health. We help men create change where it matters — at home, work, and in themselves.

Excited to be here at the National Mens Health Gathering in Brisbane.

I’ll be speaking later on lived experience therapy, but before that I’m pumped to be hearing the stories of other men who are working in this sector.

Mens health matters.

Today I am speaking at the National Men’s Health Gathering 2025, taking place from 22–24 October at the Brisbane Showgrounds.

My presentation will focus on the importance of embedding lived experience in men's mental health support. I'll share my story with a specific focus on:
- how masculinity prevents men engaging in therapy.
- How therapists can use lived experience to foster trust and emotional safety with men.
- How lived experience therapy helps men to stay engaged in therapy, and improve their mental health.

I'm looking forward to sharing my insights into men's mental health, but also networking with fellow practitioners and organisations - learning about what supports are out there whilst flying the Mindful Men flag.

This national gathering is an important opportunity to connect, learn, and advance the conversation on improving the health and wellbeing of men and boys.

October is Mental Health Awareness Month in Australia — and each Sunday, we’re encouraging you to prioritise your mental health.

This week’s reminder: Connect.

Good mental health grows through connection. Reach out to a mate, call a family member, or grab a coffee with someone you trust. Sharing space and conversation can lift the weight of isolation and remind you that you’re not alone.

Connection helps you prioritise your mental health — one genuine chat at a time.

It’s OCD Awareness Week — a time to raise awareness of what OCD is.

OCD can feel overwhelming — but recovery is possible.

Therapies like ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention), mindfulness, and EMDR can help retrain the brain’s response to intrusive thoughts.

It takes time and support, but things can get better. I know, because I’ve lived it. And one of the most important things is to find the right support for you.

It’s OCD Awareness Week — a time to raise awareness of what OCD is.

A key concept in OCD is ego-dystonic — the obsessions and compulsions feel separate from your core self. You don’t want them; you resist them; you hate them.

That’s different from personality traits, which feel consistent with who you are (ego-syntonic). That’s partly why OCD is so painful — people struggle with thoughts and behaviours going against their values.

Understanding this can help reduce self-blame. It can also help shine light at the end of the OCD tunnel.
