PART 1 |
Dr. Emily O’Leary and Jack Henderson recently sat down to talk about OCD and anxiety in school-aged children.

In this first part, they highlight an important question for parents: when is it time to seek support?

A key indicator is impact and impairment. This means when anxiety or OCD is interfering with a child’s day-to-day life, making it harder to participate, cope, or function as they usually would. This is where a child, and their family, may benefit from some extra support.

We’ll be back soon with Part 2, where we continue this important conversation.

A reset doesn’t have to be big to be helpful. When anxiety or stress builds, sometimes the small, consistent things can help shift how you feel.

Taking a break from screens, getting outside, setting boundaries, or checking in with your thoughts…these are all simple ways to support your nervous system.

You don’t need to do everything at once. Just start with one small thing.

What if something as simple as walking in sunlight could help..even just a little?

It’s not an overnight fix for anxiety. But when your nervous system is activated, small things like movement and time outdoors can support your body in settling.

Walking can help release tension, while sunlight can support sleep, energy, and overall mood.

These small shifts won’t remove anxiety completely..but over time, they can make it feel more manageable.

It doesn’t have to be long or intense. Even a short stroll can help.

When anxiety shows up, it’s not just in your thoughts..it’s in your body too. Movement can be a simple way to support your nervous system, helping to release tension and shift that “on edge” feeling.

We’re big advocates for making the most of our beautiful Sunshine Coast and getting outside, whether that’s a short walk, some fresh air, or a few quiet moments in nature.

It doesn’t have to be intense or structured. Small moments of movement can make a difference.

Do you ever feel like part of you wants to relax, but another part of you won’t stop worrying?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy is based on the idea that our mind is made up of different “parts”, including anxious, overthinking or self-critical parts that are trying to protect us.

Rather than trying to get rid of these thoughts, IFS helps you understand them, work with them and reduce the intensity of anxiety over time.

In our latest blog, we explore how IFS therapy works and how it can help with anxiety, overthinking and emotional overwhelm.

If you’ve ever felt stuck in your own thoughts, this approach may offer a different way forward.

A quick check-in can help bring you out of autopilot and back into the present moment.

When anxiety or worry is high, it’s easy to stay in your head and feel stuck thinking, analysing, and trying to solve everything at once.

Taking a moment to pause and ask yourself how you’re feeling, what’s been on your mind, and what you might need can help create a sense of clarity and grounding. It doesn’t have to take long. Even a small check-in can shift how you feel.

Try this at some point today, especially if your mind feels busy or overwhelmed.

Does your child seem distracted, restless, or unable to focus?

It might look like ADHD, but sometimes it’s actually anxiety. Anxiety and ADHD can appear very similar in children, which is why they’re often confused. But understanding what’s really going on beneath the surface is important for getting the right support.

In our latest blog, we explore why anxiety and ADHD are commonly mistaken for each other, and what signs parents on the Sunshine Coast can look out for.

If you’ve been wondering whether your child’s behaviour might be anxiety, this article may help bring some clarity.

Anxiety doesn’t always look the way people expect.

You can be functioning, working, showing up for others all while your mind is constantly running in the background. Constant overthinking, planning, preparing for things that might go wrong.

For many adults, worry becomes the main way anxiety shows up, even when you know it isn’t helping.

If this feels familiar, we can help. It is possible to feel calmer again, and there are ways to step out of worry loops.

Anxiety House Sunshine Coast provides evidence-based therapy for children, teens, and adults experiencing anxiety and chronic worry.
