Let’s talk about pill bleeds, because there’s so much confusion around them, and understanding this can completely change how you see your body and your cycle.

When you take the contraceptive pill, your body isn’t actually ovulating. The pill works by suppressing ovulation and keeping your hormones (especially oestrogen and progesterone) at a constant, synthetic level. This means your natural cycle (with all its beautiful rises and falls) gets switched off for as long as you’re on it.

Now, that bleed you get during the placebo (sugar pill) week isn’t a real period. It’s what we call a withdrawal bleed, basically, a response to the sudden drop in synthetic hormones when you stop taking the active pills.

Here’s what’s really happening:
đź’Ą The lining of your uterus builds up just a little under the influence of synthetic hormones.
đź’Ą When you stop taking the pills, hormone levels fall.
💥 That drop triggers a bit of shedding, which looks like a period, but it’s not the same as a natural menstrual bleed that follows ovulation.

There’s no ovulation, no luteal phase, and no natural hormonal rhythm, so your body isn’t cycling in the true sense. The bleed was originally included just to make the pill feel more “natural” and reassure women that everything was fine, but it’s completely optional. Some pills even allow you to skip that bleed entirely.

When you come off the pill, it can take a little while (sometimes not so little) for your body to reawaken its own rhythm… for ovulation to return, hormones to rebalance, and your natural menstrual cycle to start flowing again.

Surgery is a powerful medical tool, but it’s also a physical, hormonal, and energetic intervention. Every time we go under anaesthesia or have an organ or tissue operated on, the body enters a deep state of stress and inflammation to protect itself.

That’s why, in Natural Gynecology and holistic approaches, we always encourage women to explore all less invasive options first (herbal support, bodywork, emotional healing, nutrition, and lifestyle adjustments) before considering surgery.

And when surgery is truly necessary, it can be approached with awareness, preparing the body beforehand, supporting detox pathways, and nurturing recovery after, so that the womb and whole system can heal gracefully.

Our bodies are always communicating - softly, subtly, like a gentle breeze brushing past. When we slow down and truly listen, we begin to understand the language of our cycles… the whispers become wisdom. 🌸🌕

These signs are the womb’s language, softly telling us when she’s thriving and when she needs a little more care ✨

🩸 Large clots (bigger than a 10c coin)
– Occasional small clots can be normal, but frequent or large clots can point to stagnation in the womb, excess oestrogen, or conditions like fibroids or endometriosis. It can also mean the uterine lining built up more than usual and is shedding all at once.

🤎 Dark brown blood at the beginning or end of the period
– This is often “old blood” that’s taken longer to leave the womb. If most of your bleed is brown or sluggish, it can indicate low circulation, hormonal imbalances, or incomplete shedding of the endometrium.

❤️ Very bright red blood
– Usually a sign of a healthy, flowing bleed 🌹 Especially when it starts this way and stays fairly consistent. But if it’s super watery and bright, it might also signal heat or inflammation in the system.

đź©· Pale pink or watery flow
– Can point to deficiencies, low blood volume, or a weakened uterine lining, often seen in people who are run down, stressed, or have low iron or hormonal levels.

đź–¤ Almost black blood
– Indicates that the blood has been sitting in the uterus for a while before coming out. It can be connected to stagnation, cold in the womb, or old lining that wasn’t fully cleared in previous cycles.

🔥 Very heavy flow (needing to change protection hourly or flooding through)
– This can be a sign of hormonal excess (like too much oestrogen), fibroids, adenomyosis, or thyroid issues.

💧 Very light or short flow (1–2 days)
– May reflect low oestrogen, thin uterine lining, stress, or nutritional depletion. Also common in people coming off hormonal contraception as the body recalibrates.

🩹 Strong, sharp cramps with clotting
– Suggests the uterus is working extra hard to expel built-up tissue, often linked with stagnation, inflammation, or conditions like endometriosis.

🌿 Mid-cycle spotting or bleeding
– Can be related to ovulation, but frequent or unpredictable spotting may indicate hormonal fluctuations or conditions like PCOS, fibroids, or cervical changes.

Your cycle is always speaking to you, sometimes in whispers, sometimes a little louder.
Irregular bleeds, intense cramps, strong PMS… these aren’t random. They’re gentle signs from your womb asking for a bit more care, attention, and balance.

I often receive messages from women who had their uterus and ovaries removed in an attempt to “cure” endometriosis. Every time, my heart tightens… not from judgement, but from a deep knowing that this story is much bigger than what many of us have been told.

The first time I heard this was back in highschool. A friend’s mum shared during a kitchen chat that her reproductive organs had been removed. No clear diagnosis. No other options. She’d “already had children”, so for the doctors, her womb and ovaries were seen as unnecessary. I still remember how that landed in my body… even then, something didn’t feel right.

For decades, medicine has treated the uterus as if its only purpose is to carry babies, and the ovaries as if their only role is to release eggs. If a woman no longer wants (or is able) to get pregnant, surgery is often seen as a simple solution. But they are so much more than that.

🌿 The ovaries are powerful endocrine glands that regulate mood, metabolism, bone health and more.
🌿 The uterus has been labelled a “problem” organ since Ancient Greece, when Hippocrates claimed it wandered through the body causing illness. That outdated idea still echoes today.

Since the 1980s, science has shown that endometriotic lesions are not the same as uterine lining, endometriosis does not come from the uterus. So why, in 2025, are hysterectomies still being done as if they were a quick fix?

Research is revealing something beautiful, the uterus and brain are in constant conversation. Animal studies show that removing the uterus affects spatial memory, reminding us the uterus is part of a complex, interconnected system. And in humans, removing the ovaries before menopause is linked to cognitive changes, mood shifts, bone loss and more.

So when we talk about removing these organs to “treat” endometriosis, we’re not just talking about surgery, we’re talking about altering a woman’s hormonal, neurological and energetic ecosystem, often without addressing the root cause.

If you had trouble with your digestion, would anyone suggest removing your intestines? 🤔
Sounds absurd, right?
Yet hysterectomy is still offered as a quick fix for endometriosis...
