Hmmmm, how can we constantly love? It is so hard.

We love, then we get it wrong, but we love.

We Christians know we are deeply loved by God. Saved by the loving sacrifice of His Son. We know that this is love. So we love, and the Spirit directs us to love, so we love. We have been reborn to love, so we love.

But so often I get it wrong. Over and over, I don't love like I should, or how I would like! What!?!

I need help, and I have it, a heavenly father.

Phew.

Our heavenly Father helps his children through prayer and his Spirit. He can strengthen us to more deeply understand and know the love of Jesus. To know how to joyfully self sacrificially love.

He helps his children know how to love.

Nice.

So to prayer I go ….. I hope to grow…. in love …..

‭1 John 4:10-12 NIV‬
This is love: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son as an atoning sacrifice for our sins. Dear friends, since God so loved us, we also ought to love one another. No one has ever seen God; but if we love one another, God lives in us and his love is made complete in us.

LOVE. GRIPPING ON AND NEVER LETTING GO. Genuine love never lets go of the good, it holds on. Your friends, your family, and other Christians could be hard to love, immature, and in no way attracting your affection. Yet as Christians, we want to treat them like family, at times like besties.
With a vice-like grip, we are to hold onto the good, to love regardless of the people around us.
I surf and when I duck-dive under what I think is a massive wave, I hold onto my board with a vice-like grip, with all my strength because I know that my board could carry me through the broken wave. Looking to Jesus we hold onto love.
Conversely, love is repulsed by evil, it casts it away, and it hates it so it does not reach out for it. My daughter and I have seen sharks in the surf and we warned others to leave immediately. Love is repulsed by evil.
We are not as strong as we would like to be, we need help. When duck-diving under large broken waves, at times my board is ripped out of my hands. I am not strong enough to hold onto it. Through prayer, God can strengthen us to love and hate appropriately. Pray, love and hate what is evil. Hold onto the good calling on the strength that Jesus provides. Romans 12:9-13

LIVING IN THE KINDNESS OF GOD. God's kindness is so complete that once you have experienced it and entered it through the Spirit, you will never leave it. Disobedient people, all of us Christians, entered into the kindness of God when we were grafted into his people, gaining all the riches of the children of God. Jesus followers are doing life within the kindness of God, fully included in His family. How kind is that! Romans 11:17-24.

BEING ACTIVE AND GROWING SPIRITUAL FRUIT. To grow spiritually we need to be active. To get moving. God has already changed us Christians, transformed us, giving us a remarkable newness of life. Yet we need to actively 'walk in' our new life. We were baptized into Christ Jesus and his death and just as Jesus was raised to life by the glory of the Father, so we are to get up and 'walk in newness of life'. To grow spiritually we need to be active walkers, this will lead to fruit that leads to sanctification. Romans 6:4, 11, 13, 19, 22.

KINDNESS IS BIG, NOT SMALL. Kindness is much bigger than we think. Being kind is deeply otherworldly, it reflects the mercy of God. We are to extend our kindness beyond those who love us all the way to those who hate us, just like God's mercy has been extended to all of us.

Kindness is more than doing small caring acts for friends and family, as excellent as these things are. I admire anyone who does caring consistent small things for those they love.
But Christian kindness goes all the way to those who don't deserve our loving service, providing kindness to people who are haters. We need help to do this, this is supernatural, we need God's help, we need to pray for those who hate us (Lk 6:28) and then we are to step out and be merciful where no mercy is deserved. To be kind to those we love and those who do not attract our affection but seek to repel it. To be merciful like Jesus and our Father.

But love your enemies, do good to them, and lend to them without expecting to get anything back. Then your reward will be great, and you will be children of the Most High because he is kind to the ungrateful and wicked. Be merciful, just as your Father is merciful.
Luke 6:35 & 36
