Juggling work and life has become increasingly difficult over the last few months - explaining the big gap in my posts.

I’ve still been taking clients but I like to be able to give 100% in what I do and right now that hasn’t been feasible.

I’ve decided it’s been to take a break for a few months and reassess in the new year how to split my time between all the areas of my life. Right now I’ll be focusing on me, motherhood and happiness 🥰

Mum first, sleep consultant second.
I totally understand all of these things, and I do all of these things. It doesn’t have to be all or nothing, working on independent sleep doesn’t mean you’ll never hold your baby for a nap again.

If you don’t want to make a change right now then I’m the last person who’d tell you you need to. But, if you feel like you need and want to make a change then I am your girl 🫶🏻

Now that I’m a mum I’m often asked if I practise what I preach and the answer is yes… and no 😛

I set healthy sleep habits in motion from the very beginning and E has been a pretty good sleeper as a result of this and her temperament.

What we had been doing was working - she slept downstairs in the bassinet for day naps when she was a newborn (so I could keep an eye on her as I was a little anxious) then she started sleeping on me a lot, and I was fine with that (I love it). Recently it’s been harder for me to get her to sleeping stretches in the days and almost impossible for her dad… so we made a change. This week she’s started sleeping in her cot for at home naps - something I recommend, so she gets used to independent sleep in the day (night is no problem for her).

Why am I telling you this? Because I believe you should do what works for you and not ‘fix’ things unless you need and want to. I know my methods would have worked to get independent day sleep for E weeks ago but I was just enjoying the snugs, now that her dad cares for her a couple of days a month (FIFO life) on his own she needs to be able to sleep without me, so that’s what I’m teaching her.

Unpaid doesn’t mean it’s not work.
It can be incredibly challenging and you can enjoy it.
Just because you wanted it or chose it doesn’t mean it’s not hard.

All mums are incredible.

One of the most important parts of my job is helping parent set realistic expectations around sleep, sometimes they are based on bub’s biological capabilities and sometimes it’s to help parents realise that perfectionism doesn’t exist in parenting and to help reduce the anxiety it can cause.

Accepting that some days things won’t go to plan is a great way to manage your expectations around sleep and stops the spiral of ever changing settling methods which very rarely helps.

I totally understand how having a few bad days or nights can have a massive impact on your mood and perspective. The problem is, this is pretty common for sleep, even babies who sleep well generally have bad days and it’s easy to start panicking when that happens.

When I have these little blips I like to look at how things have improved from last month to today rather than yesterday to today. Progress is not linear, sometimes it takes time to get to the end goal, keep moving forward slowly and you’ll be amazed at how far you can come in a few weeks.
