Tired of painful, bulging varicose veins and being told you need surgery?

Radiofrequency Ablation (RFA) for varicose veins is now available at Varicose Vein Doctor – Sippy Downs. This minimally invasive “keyhole” treatment uses controlled heat inside the vein to seal it shut, usually under local anaesthetic, with no hospital stay for most patients.

✅ Modern, non‑surgical treatment option
✅ Doctor‑led care with a focus on comfort and safety
✅ Walk‑in, walk‑out style procedures for many cases

Dr David Pratt now offers RFA alongside ultrasound‑guided sclerotherapy at Nexus Pain Management, Fairfax Village, Sippy Downs, providing comprehensive options for small, medium and larger problem veins.

Appointments are currently available, with short waiting times for assessment.

Compression After Vein Treatment

Why Compression Is Used

Compression stockings are commonly recommended after vein procedures.
They can provide short‑term comfort, but they are not essential for everyone.

Short‑Term Benefits

Wearing compression for a brief period may help:

Reduce mild pain

Minimise bruising

Control swelling

Improve early comfort during recovery

These benefits are modest and vary between individuals.

What Compression Does Not Do

Current research shows little evidence that compression:

Improves long‑term vein closure

Reduces recurrence

Enhances long‑term symptom control

Compression is mainly for comfort, not long‑term outcomes.

What Major Guidelines Recommend

United States (SVS/AVF/AVLS)
Compression is suggested after ablation or sclerotherapy.

Higher pressures (>20 mmHg) may reduce early pain.

Duration is not fixed — left to clinician judgement.

United Kingdom (NICE)
Do not use compression for more than 7 days after treatment.

Compression should not replace proper vein intervention.

Europe (ESVS 2022)
Supports short‑term use for symptom relief.

Common practice: 1–2 weeks of class II stockings, then individualise.

Typical Duration
Your clinician may recommend:

24 hours to 1 week after ablation or phlebectomy

Longer (up to several weeks) after extensive sclerotherapy

Adjustments based on your symptoms and treatment extent

A Tailored Approach
Compression is not mandatory.
Your plan will be based on:

Your comfort

The type of procedure

The amount of swelling or bruising

Your personal preference

If compression feels uncomfortable or unnecessary, discuss this with your clinician.

Understanding Your Vein Treatment Options

Injections or Laser? Here’s how we decide.

🌿 Why Veins Become a Problem
Some veins stop working properly and allow blood to pool. This can cause visible veins, aching, heaviness, or cosmetic concerns.
Treatment depends on which veins are affected — the small surface veins or the deeper “main” vein.

💉 Injections (Sclerotherapy)

Best for: Small varicose veins and spider veins near the skin.

How it works

A tiny amount of solution is injected into the vein.

This irritates the vein wall so it collapses.

Over time, the body absorbs the vein naturally.

When injections are enough

Ultrasound shows the deeper “trunk” veins are working well.

Only small surface veins are enlarged.

Ideal for cosmetic spider veins or a few bulging side branches.

🔥 Laser Vein Treatment (Endovenous Laser) or Radiofrequency Ablation.

Best for: Larger, deeper veins that are not functioning properly.

Why some people need laser

Sometimes the main surface vein (often the great saphenous vein) becomes stretched and its valves leak.
This causes blood to fall backwards and refill the smaller veins — meaning injections alone won’t last.

How laser works

A fine fibre is placed inside the faulty vein through a tiny puncture.

Heat seals the vein from the inside.

Blood is naturally redirected into healthier veins.

Performed under local anaesthetic.

🧩 Putting It Simply
If the “main pipe” is healthy:
Injections can tidy up the small “side pipes.”

If the “main pipe” is leaking:
Laser is used to switch off that faulty pipe first.
Injections may then be used later for any remaining surface veins.

✔️ The Goal
A personalised treatment plan that:

Improves symptoms

Enhances appearance

Prevents veins from returning

A very important point. Venous disease is more than cosmesis.

🦵 A small sore on your leg could be more serious than you think. Venous stasis ulcers—open wounds caused by poor circulation can signal deeper vein disease that can worsen without care.

💡 The good news: modern, minimally invasive treatments restore circulation and heal wounds faster, all in an outpatient setting.

If you notice leg swelling, discoloration, or a wound that won’t heal, don’t wait!

📅 Schedule a consultation with a board-certified vein specialist at Center for Vein Restoration today and take the first step toward healthy legs.
