If autistic people are impaired due to underpruned synapses, are neurotypical people impaired due to overpruned synapses too?

What is the right amount of connections for the human brain and who says so? ;)

Scientists have found that the "voices" heard by some people with schizophrenia come from their brains confusing their own inner speech with outside sounds. By studying brainwaves using EEG on people with schizophrenia—some who hear voices and some who don't—researchers discovered that those who experience these hallucinations don’t properly switch off their inner monologues when they speak. Normally, the brain sends a "corollary discharge" signal that quiets our internal voice so we recognize our own speech.

But in people hearing voices, this signal is missing, and another brain signal called "efference copy" is overly active, causing their auditory cortex to react strongly to their own inner voice. This mix-up makes the brain treat internal thoughts like external voices, leading to the experience of hearing sounds that aren’t there. Understanding how these brain signals work might help improve treatments for schizophrenia, which currently mostly rely on talk therapy to manage symptoms.

Finland’s strategy is rooted in a straightforward principle: stable housing is essential for rebuilding a life.

Rather than mandating sobriety or employment as prerequisites for assistance, they offer housing first, with no strings attached.

Once housed, individuals receive support for mental health, addiction, and job opportunities.

This approach has significantly lowered chronic homelessness, cut public service costs, and enabled thousands to reclaim stability and dignity.

It serves as a compelling lesson that addressing homelessness begins with empathy and providing a place to call home.

Are you an independent support coordinator?

Have you thought about your direction now we are to be registered?

For me, I was overwhelmed at the idea of registering as a sole trader. My focus is serving my participants, not undergoing expensive, stressful, time-consuming and regular audits!

After 2.5 years on my own, I have now joined forces with Inspire Consulting and could not be happier with this decision. We are team of coordinators who have each other's backs and stand together as the NDIS changes press on, to ensure compliance while continuing to put our collective participants at the forefront of everything we do.

If you are a support coordinator or recovery coach who shares our values, and are unsure what your next step is - please consider joining us.
