How does this condition affect the body? 🤷‍♂️

💪 Muscular: difficulty walking, paralysis with weak muscles, problems with coordination, stiff muscles, overactive reflexes, or paralysis of one side of the body.

👀 Visual: blurred vision, double vision, sudden visual loss, or temporary loss of vision in one eye.

😮‍💨 Whole body: fatigue, light-headedness, or vertigo.

🗣 Speech: difficulty speaking, slurred speech, or speech loss.

🫆 Sensory: pins and needles or reduced sensation of touch.

🥴 Facial: muscle weakness or numbness.

🦵 Limbs: numbness or weakness, loss of balance.

Q: So, what can we do about it? 🤔

A: Exercise!

This could include aerobic exercises like walking 🚶‍♀️ and cycling 🚴, strength training 🏋‍♂️, balance exercises like tandem walking 🤸‍♀️, and functional movements such as repeated sit-to-stand motions. 

- Additionally, exercises to improve fine motor skills and cognitive exercises are often incorporated;

Today was hosted by ; a community garden space at the Nambour Showgrounds (I had no idea!) - definitely worth having a look at when they do Harvest Days 🥬🌶🥦🫜🫚

Thanks to who helped caffeinate the attendees - delicious coffee ☕️

A lot more goes on beneath the surface following a stroke. For survivors, adjusting to life after the event is challenging due to the various hidden factors they often experience.

This month we are highlighting: STROKE 🧠

Top 3 Functional Tests for Post-Stroke Assessment

☝️ Why these simple tests matter in recovery;

Aerobic exercises like walking and cycling, strength training with resistance bands, balance exercises like tandem walking, and functional movements such as repeated sit-to-stand motions are great exercises to start with!
Additionally, exercises to improve fine motor skills or cognitive exercise could also be included.

💡 Post-stroke rehab should be personalised, measurable, and safe. These 3 tests offer a clear picture of a patient’s functional status:

🕐 1. Timed Up & Go (TUG)

👨‍🔬 Normative reference values;
- 60–69 years: ~8.1 s (95% CI: 7.1–9.0)
- 70–79 years: ~9.2 s (8.2–10.2)
- 80–99 years: ~11.3 s (10.0–12.7)

*Scores >14 s have been linked to increased fall risk in community-dwelling older adults

⚖️ 2. Balance Tests (e.g. Berg Balance Scale)

👩‍🔬 Clinical Relevance;
Individuals ≥ 60 yrs who can stand on one leg for less than 5–6 seconds are at markedly increased risk for falls during daily activities.

Those in the 80+ bracket often decline below the 10 s mark—and are clinically vulnerable—so even small improvements (moving from ~5 s to ~10 s) may be meaningful.

🚶‍♀️ 3. 6-Minute Walk Test (6MWT)

🧑‍🔬 Community older adults:
- 60–69 yrs: Men ~572 m / Women ~538 m
- 70–79 yrs: Men ~527 m / Women ~471 m
- 80–89 yrs: Men ~417 m / Women ~392 m

🔁 Together, these tests:
✅ Offer a full view of recovery needs
✅ Guide tailored rehab goals
✅ Improve safety & daily function
