Many families will be preparing for the impending cyclone which is expected to cross the coast late Thursday or early Friday. The clinic is operating as usual, while monitoring conditions. It may be necessary to change appointments to telehealth later in the week, depending on how the weather system progresses.
QLD Health has developed a book about cyclones, specifically for children. Here is the Auslan version:https://www.childrens.health.qld.gov.au/resources/our-work/birdies-tree/birdie-and-the-cyclone-auslan

A local psychologist kindly shared this new resource with me. If your family is into Disney, this is a must have book, particularly for primary-aged kids. What do I love about it?
- the book is aimed at coaching parents to communicate effectively about emotions with their children.
- there are explanations of each emotion, but also comparisons between (e.g. nervous vs afraid).
- no feeling is made out to be bad or wrong. All are valid and children (and their parents) need to know what to do when they encounter them.
- there is a lovely mood meter at the back of the book that you could copy and use as a daily check in with your children.

Facts about Feelings is available at Big W or Amazon for around $14.

We talk a great deal about modelling to children how to develop and maintain relationships. Knowing how to repair when things don’t go how we want is a really important skill to learn.

All the best to the kids and parents starting school this week. For most, it is a big mix of emotions which is completely normal. Ride the wave and try to be that safe harbour for your kids to return home to. You've got this!
