With the release of the Aged Care Act today, we are one step closer to reform – but it’s only one part of the solution.
Critical issues of the communication and swallowing needs of older people in residential aged care still need to be addressed. We will provide a detailed analysis of the Act soon, but it’s clear that urgent action is still needed.
Despite the prevalence of communication and swallowing needs in residential aged care, speech pathology services are provided for only 0.06 minutes per resident each day. That’s a fraction of the already insufficient four minutes per day of allied health services provided.
Imagine being unable to get your words out clearly to make your choices known, keep connections with loved ones, or safely enjoy your favourite meals. For many older adults, this is their everyday experience.
This level of care they receive in residential aged care is nowhere near adequate to meet their needs or to ensure their health and wellbeing.
Speech pathologists play a crucial role as part of multidisciplinary teams, supporting older people with these critical needs. Speech Pathology Australia continues to advocate for the government to commit to reform to better identify and meet the allied health care needs (including speech pathology) of older people in residential aged care.
