Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a systemic autoimmune disease where the body's immune system attacks its own tissues. Whilst there is no known cure to the autoimmune inflammatory process underlying RA, the symptoms of joint pain, swelling and stiffness can often be controlled and reduced by a range of medications. Unfortunately all medications have potential for negative side effects and don't work for everyone.

A study aimed to examine whether clinical hypnotherapy could be effective in treating the symptoms and disease activity of RA. Results found hypnotherapy produced more significant improvements in both the subjective and objective measurements, above relaxation and medication, and improvements were also found to be of clinical significance, and becoming more significant, when patients practised the hypnosis imagery regularly during the follow-up periods.

A study aimed to examine whether a psychological intervention such as clinical hypnotherapy could be effective in treating the symptoms and disease activity of rheumatoid arthritis.

When we’re stressed/overwhelmed it typically boils down to a few things:

💪We’re trying to influence things we can’t control.

🤔We’re not taking enough responsibility and control for things within our control.

We are under resourced or have reached our capacity to manage the stressful event or situation👨‍🔧

🧠We’re trying to resolve a problem that really needs us to emotionally cope better with it rather than try to eliminate or change it 💚

If behaviours are not fully under our voluntary control, even though we may be highly motivated to tackle them, we may not actually perform the behaviour due to environmental or psychosocial factors getting in our way.

Why can’t I do this? Barriers to lifestyle changes.

So what prevents us from implementing new lifestyle changes such as reducing stress and anxiety, quitting smoking, reducing alcohol, getting more physically active, and consuming a healthy balanced diet, for promoting good health and healing? 🤔

ℹ️We live in the information era where anything we could possibly want to know is at the end of our fingertips.

Most people, no matter what their educational background or socioeconomic status, are very aware of how living healthily can improve the quality and longevity of our lives and what the main risk factors are that can and do make the most difference.

If it’s not lack of awareness and knowledge, then what is it that prevent us from implementing healthier behaviours and habits and reducing our risks of disease and ill-health i.e., what are the barriers to change❓

Health psychologists have spent decades studying and researching different populations and health conditions to try and fathom what the key principles are that affect change behaviours.

What’s evident is that core psychological constructs such as low confidence, self-esteem, self-efficacy, and fear, often lead to behaviours such as procrastination, decision fatigue, rumination, denial, and avoidance. 😒

In turn, these can result in more serious and often chronic conditions e.g., self-neglect, physical and emotional self-harm, anxiety, stress, depression and ultimately disease and illness. 🤒

By tackling some or all of these constructs and/or the behaviours emanating from them, our convictions and commitment to implement new changes for our health and well-being becomes ever stronger 💪 🏆

Endometriosis is a debilitating chronic condition causing intense pain and discomfort for sufferers. So many sufferers are told it's not curable, you'll need to learn to manage it, but surgery can help to reduce the symptoms.

How aware are you of the food decisions you've made today?

Everyone of us are influenced in our busy and distracting environments everyday, so much so that we aren't aware of large proportion of the food decisions that we make i.e., they are done mindlessly.

These influences have important ramifications on the amount we over/consume and can lead to a false sense of security in that what we report and perceive we eat, is not based on the true reality of what we actually eat.
