Insurances!

Some could go absolutely bonkers here but I'll leave this up to the Insurance broker 😄

When you just started out as a support worker, then you will face this topic:

What Insurance do I need?

Here is a list you can follow when looking for an insurance provider:

➕️ Public Liability (against claims of personal injury or property damage caused to third parties)
➕️ Professional Indemnity (against claims of negligence or errors in the support work provided)
➕️ Personal Accident (for independent workers who injured themselves while working)
➕️ Vehicle Insurance (covers damage to vehicle and third party during support work)

If you need more specific information then contact a broker, they will be able to tailor the insurance to your needs.

This is just a general guide and is hopefully helpful 😉

What a great session!

Our first Supervision session with the legendary Dr Bob Jacobs was a success.

One hour flies when you have fun 😁

We covered many topics Support Workers have to face in their every day routine while working with participants who struggle with mental health or other problems and received great tools to work with.

Here are some topics we talked about:

✔️How we can bring up challenging conversations with participants

✔️Expectations in certain outcomes and how we can let go of it

✔️Anxiety and how we can use breathing in order to calm the nervous system

✔️Setting clear boundaries with participants: the slippery slope between friendship and working relationship

✔️Maintaining a healthy work environment by choosing the perfect matching participant

The next Supervision session is already in the planning, so make sure you're not missing out!

Number 1 reason why people don't become independent Support Workers is because of...

FEAR❗️

Fear for the unknown.
Fear for not finding participants.

What if I could give you a simple step-by-step guide in order to help you gain:

💪 more confidence
🧠 better understanding about the system
🥳 and how to approach new participants

Having Supervision for Mental Healthcare workers is essential in order to let go tension and stress and rock up the next day with new energy.

We experience almost on a daily basis emotional outbreaks with our participants and as humans, who care about others wellbeing, we take it on and keep thinking about it...

Even when we already finished our shift!!!

We sit on the couch, reflect on what happened and wished we would have responded in a different way.

"I should have sat down when he said he was stressed....but I thought...."

So, how can you make sure you can respond to your participants needs so they and YOU are happy?

If you want to learn dancing, you go and find a dance instructor!

So if you want to learn how to maintain calm and focused when one of your participants has a mental breakdown, is manic or aggressive, then you want to talk to a Mental Health Specialist and ask for a solution!

That's why they say to us support workers: Do regular supervision sessions!

✔️ It's an opportunity to learn
✔️ You're gaining knowledge around self-care when dealing with mental health participants
✔️ You'll be able to de-brief and talk about challenging scenarios
✔️ You'll maintain emotional resilience and shake off stress

But also, you need to know what it NOT is:

❌ it's not a private counselling session with a psychologist (Sharing is caring)
❌ you don't judge other supervision participants when they tell you about challenging scenarios ("You should know that as a support worker...")
❌ you don't talk about your private problems you have at home with your partner ("He is just not doing the dishes..." -Wrong group!)
