Today is RUOK Day?

If someone you know is doing it tough, they won’t always tell you. Sometimes it’s up to us to trust our gut instinct and ask someone who may be struggling with life, 'are you OK?', in our own way.

By asking and listening, we can help those we care about feel more supported and connected, which can help stop them from feeling worse over time.

Ask your mob, in your way, R U OK?

Our mob share a special connection to Country and to each other, through culture, community and shared experience. Regardless of where we live, or who our mob is, we can all go through tough times, times when we don’t feel great about our lives or ourselves. That’s why it’s important to always be looking out for each other. Because we're Stronger Together.

Cherbourg visit – Connecting to Culture
Written by Brad Beetson - Manngoor Dja Community Engagement Officer

Our visit to Cherbourg highlights Mannggoor Dja’s commitment to a wholistic approach to the health of our clients both culturally, mentally and physically.

In August we took 38 Elders and clients of Manngoor Dja from the Sunshine Coast and Gympie to Cherbourg to visit the Ration Shed to help connect our people with the story of the stolen generation and families that have been removed and placed in Cherbourg.

Once we arrived, we were greeted by Uncle Eric Law an Elder and one of the original families and the first Indigenous Superintendent of Cherbourg once the Protection Act had been removed.

Listening to Uncle Eric describe the hardships encountered by our people was both up-lifting and sad. He spoke of the resilience of our Elders, the sporting prowess of our people and the connection of families with many mobs… one tribe all coming together - that is the community of Cherbourg.

After a deadly lunch provided by Aunty Elvie Douglas our Elders were shown through the sporting museum with Uncle Eric telling stories of heroes such as Frank Big Shot Fisher (rugby league) , Mitta Dynevor (boxing) and Eddie Gilbert (cricket). He spoke of their battle to overcome the racism of the day to rise up and to compete at a high level in their chosen sports.

Personally I think it was a significant visit as only three of our clients had ever ventured to Cherbourg helping them all gain a greater understanding of our peoples journey and some of the battles that have been forced upon our people through the journey of colonialism and the introduction of the Protection Act as well as the forming of a community-ty through the resilience of our Elders. Many of our clients had connections to Cherbourg through their Wakka Wakka heritage, making the visit even more meaningful.

We would like to thank the Ration Shed Uncle Eric Law, Aunty Elvie Douglas and the community of Cherbourg for opening their arms and continuing to tell the true story of our Elder’s and the journey of the Stolen Generation.
