On World Osteoporosis Awareness Day this year, our community came together to connect & learn about osteoporosis, and enjoy a delicious calcium-rich cheese platter sponsored by Woombye Cheese Factory Woombye Cheese Company. Also thank you, IGA Forest Glen! This gathering marked the launch of our โ€œLetโ€™s Chat About Osteoporosisโ€ support and information group!

Weโ€™re excited to announce that from now on, we will run this support group for our members once a month. It's a space where we can share experiences, discuss research-based information, and support one another on the journey to better bone health.

Fun fact: We had so much cheese that our Monday classes got to enjoy some too โ€“ all while balancing on a Bosu ball!

Here are some important facts about osteoporosis:
๐Ÿ“Œ Osteoporosis weakens bones, making them more brittle and prone to fractures.
๐Ÿ“Œ It usually develops gradually and often shows no symptoms until a fracture occurs.
๐Ÿ“Œ 1 in 3 women and 1 in 5 men over 50 will experience a fracture in their lifetime.
๐Ÿ“Œ Only 20% of patients with osteoporotic fractures are ever diagnosed or treated for the disease.

We look forward to welcoming more of our members to our future group meetups!

As Mental Health Awareness Week comes to an end, itโ€™s important to recognise that 42.9% of Australians aged 16-85 have experienced a mental health disorder at some point in their lives. For those living with a physical health condition like osteoporosis, the risk of mental distressโ€”and mental health disorders such as anxiety and depressionโ€”is significantly higher.

On World Mental Health Day (October 10th), the Nordica Health community came together for a gentle yoga and relaxation session to support our members. Led by Bronwyn, a dedicated mental health nurse and passionate yoga teacher, the session was a beautiful reminder of the importance of nurturing both mind and body on this meaningful day ๐ŸŒป

At Nordica Health, we are committed to providing ongoing support to our community, ensuring that individuals living with osteoporosis feel empowered and informed in managing their health. We believe that caring for both physical and mental well-being is essential, and our practices are thoughtfully designed to address both aspects of health.

Letโ€™s continue raising awareness of the powerful connection between physical and mental health, and how we can support one another on this journey. ๐Ÿ’™

What started as a simple idea in my head sparked curiosity, possibilities, excitement, and some hesitation. After sharing it with others, and fast forward 2-3 months, we now have a team, sponsors, a fundraiser landing page, and social media platforms to share our journey!

Our journey mirrors the

As we near the end of Osteoporosis Awareness Month, we want to celebrate and share the inspiring messages our community members have contributed about the meaning of bone health. Additionally, we've created a visual representation of their bone health journeys so far, noted on the blue paper squares with an arrow. This reminds us that any journey, including the journey towards improved bone health, is rarely linear - often marked by ups and downs.

Let's take a moment to explore the meaning of bone health shared by our community members. Here are a few inspiring examples:

Being able to play with my grandkids, with strong bones!"
- โ€œQuality aging"
- โ€œFreedom from fear"
- โ€œAging actively not actively aging"
- โ€œStay strong, balanced and confident into the future"
- โ€œstronger bones = more choices"
- โ€œBone health is independence + mobility in the twilight years"

We are immensely grateful to our community members for actively participating in our Osteoporosis Awareness Month by sharing their stories through videos, photos, messages, they have dressed up, and created visual representations of their bone health journeys. Each contribution on our wall represents a step towards building a culture of bone health awareness and fostering a supportive community.

As we conclude Osteoporosis Awareness Month, we encourage you to reflect on what bone health means to you personally. Take a moment to evaluate your habits, consider seeking professional guidance if needed, and make small changes that can have a significant impact on your skeletal well-being.

Remember, bone health is a lifelong journey, and it's never too late to prioritise it. The journey may not unfold exactly as you initially envisioned, but you won't know until you embark on it. Let's continue supporting and inspiring one another as we strive for stronger, healthier bones.

What can you do if you have been diagnosed with osteopenia/osteoporosis?

๐ŸŒŸ Take Control of Your Bone Health Journey: Empowering Steps, Treatment Options, and Your Support Team ๐ŸŒŸ

Your bone health journey deserves attention, care, and proactive steps towards maintaining strong bones. In the following video, some of our members share some changes they have done since they were diagnosed with osteoporosis.

Your Journey, Your Plan. Consult with healthcare professionals experienced in osteoporosis management to develop an individualised treatment plan that considers your needs and goals. This ensures optimised benefits while considering any risks to enhance your quality of life and well-being.

Simple Steps for Strong Bones:
1๏ธโƒฃ Balanced Nutrition: Fuel your bones with a diet rich in calcium, vitamin D, and essential nutrients.
2๏ธโƒฃ Active Lifestyle: Engage in weight-bearing exercises to improve bone density, and balance exercise to prevent falls.
3๏ธโƒฃ Falls Prevention: Create a safe environment and address vision and balance issues.
4๏ธโƒฃ Healthy Habits: Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.
5๏ธโƒฃ Sunlight: Get vitamin D naturally while protecting your skin.

Building Your Support Team:
Find professionals who align with your values and empower you to manage your bone health. Consider general practitioners, endocrinologists, rheumatologists, exercise physiologists, dieticians, psychologists/counselors, and support groups.

Take control of your bone health journey, prioritise your well-being, and build a strong support network. Together, you can achieve optimal bone health and an enriched quality of life. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿฆดโœจ
