There was a fifteen month period in my mid life where I bought into the belief that I had to be in the gym lifting weights three or four times a week to stay fit and healthy.
Culture tells women in their fifties that we must weight train to maintain muscle, metabolism, bone density. The experts say it confidently, the messaging is everywhere on socials.
Honestly, I liked how powerful I felt during the sessions. Then I began to not like how I felt afterwards.
I felt weak, and I noticed that my thyroid was not happy. My vitality dropped in such a way that I had to review what I was doing, even though part of me wanted to override it and keep going because that is what disciplined women do.
So I cancelled my membership.
I recall taking a couple of weeks of complete rest. No exercise at all. I stripped everything back and focused on more mineral support. Having regulated my nervous system, I decided not to interrupt it until I knew my next choice was the right one.
Something interesting happened. I began to feel more like myself again.
I realised that during those fifteen months, I had prioritised advice over instinct, and staying longer than my body wanted me to. I had equated strength with lifting weights in a gym, when in reality I live on acreage, I push, pull and lift heavy gardening equipment regularly, and my version of strength is tending land in nature, breathing fresh air, practising ballet and moving in ways that feel integrated rather than fragmented.
Self sovereignty, for me, was not about proving I could stick to the gym. It was about recognising sooner, when the program needed to change, without consciously pushing through.
That old version of me believed that being strong meant doing what the gurus recommended. Now, I am the person who follows their soul and understands that strength begins with listening within.
This is the kind of recalibration we practice inside The Aligned Sovereign. Not following pressure, no outsourcing, only instinct. Learning to hear your own body, your own rhythm, your own truth, and making decisions from there.
