Join me for the free Relationship Reboot - Monday Momentum, for tips on building healthier relationships. This week I shared in the theme of Declining Intimacy and the Tech Distraction: “When AI listens better than your partner—and why that stings!”

Part of the reason I hear my clients are turning to AI is that it offers instant, non-judgmental space to share, which is something we all crave when we’re feeling unheard.

Ever notice that when opening up to a friend or partner, instead of being fully heard, you get half-listening while their eyes drift to a screen? Does it feel easier to spill your feelings to an app, journal, or AI, because you receive instant answers and reassurance?

Here are the disadvantages:
1. False sense of intimacy: AI can simulate understanding, but it doesn’t truly know you or feel with you the way a partner can.
2. Lack of accountability: AI won’t challenge you on blind spots or unhealthy patterns the way a partner (or therapist) can. Relationship skills like patience, empathy, and conflict resolution only develop when practised with real people.
3. Risk of dependency: The ease of turning to AI can make it harder to tolerate the messiness and nuance of human connection.
Here are some ideas:
1. Dinner Dialogues - Have one meal a week without screens, just sharing stories from the day.
2. Reflection Jar - Keep an actual real jar for thoughts, ideas, or appreciations; pull one out weekly and discuss it together.
3. Micro Check-Ins - Ask simple questions like “How’s your energy tank out of 10 today?" to encourage real conversations and replace AI with actual intimacy.

Let’s talk about one common culprit: the “just one more episode” habit. Streaming is fun and relaxing… but too much too often steals time that could be spent cuddling, laughing, or kissing goodnight. In session, I often hear couples say their:

Romance gets sidelined - “watching together” turns into zoning out. "Watching separately" is zooming way out.
Bedtime vanishes - tired eyes mean no energy left for each other, or life!
Love is on autopilot - you share a couch, not connection.
Try this instead:
A. Kiss > Credits: the next time “Play Next” pops up, lean in for a kiss before you lean on the remote.
B. Episode Trade-Off: for every binge session, plan a mini ritual such as a walk, cup of tea with eye contact, a cuddle, chat?
C. Reclaim Your Nights: set one or two nights a week where the TV stays off and you two are the show.

What is doom-scrolling? It is when you find yourself endlessly flicking through reels, updates, or whatever clips your algorithm throws your way. It eats up your time, zaps your mood, and leaves you feeling worse than when you started. Some common symptoms noticed in the counselling room are:
1. Comparison trap: social media highlights reels can spark jealousy or dissatisfaction.
2. Conflict fuel: “You’re always on your phone” becomes a repeat argument.
3. Emotional distance: you are present physically but mentally lost in the scroll.
What can you do?
A. App Detox Challenge: you both delete your most time-sucking app for a week, then compare how it feels.
B. Replace with Rituals: trade 15 minutes of scrolling for a walk, jog, cup of tea together, or quick check-in chat.
C. Screen-Free Zones: agree that the bedroom and dinner table are a no-scroll zone.

Do you need to upgrade your love operating system due to:
“Declining Intimacy and the Tech Distraction":
1. Desire levels dropping: partners are stuck chasing digital dopamine hits instead of each other.
2. Attention spans buffering: endless scrolling delivers novelty in seconds, while real intimacy provides long-term benefits.
3. Emotional connection lag: partners left feeling lonely when phones get more screen time than they do.
What can you do?
A. Run a self-scan: Before picking up your phone, ask, "Am I bored, lonely, or avoiding connection?"
B. Choose nourishing fine dining over fast food: Scrolling is the greasy drive-thru hit; intimacy with your partner is the slow-cooked feast that nourishes you long-term.
C. Pause and Pivot: Next time you go to tap an app, hit pause, close the screen and share a hug instead.
