Toddlers learn about new foods through exploration and play. In order to do that they need to trust you and they need to feel calm at mealtimes. When parents try to force children to eat it often turns mealtimes into a battle ground. Children get stressed and their adrenaline rises which shuts them off to play and exploration of new foods. It also dampens their appetite, meaning they are no longer hungry to eat. As best you can try to reduce pressure at mealtimes and instead shift the conversation to the food talk about it in terms of colour, shape how it taste etc and then move onto to other conversations.

⁣We are talking allergy foods tonight. ⁣

⁣Once you have introduced solid foods at around 6 months of age. It is recommended to introduce allergenic foods to your baby in age appropriate ways. ⁣

⁣Delaying the introduction of allergenic foods can increase the risk of developing a food allergy down the track. Once these foods have been introduced it is recommended to keep them in the diet 2 x a week to help maintain a tolerance to them. ⁣

⁣If your child has a food allergy a paediatric dietitian can help with ensuring the nutritional adequacy of their diet.

⁣Ahh how frustrating is it when you have gone to all the effort of making a nice meal for your toddler and then they won’t eat it. It can be really disheartening and many mummas often feel like giving up. I know that it is sometimes easier in the moment to just make foods that you know your child will eat. I see you mumma, I have been there and had the exact same thoughts run through my own mind.⁣

⁣The problem with this is that while it is easier in the short term it creates bigger problems long term.⁣

⁣Children need to learn to like foods. In order to be able to learn to like foods they need to be repeatedly exposed to foods on a regular basis. If we stop making the foods for them they don’t get the opportunity to learn to like them.

⁣Do you find mealtimes are a battleground for you and your little one? Take the stress out of meal times. This concept comes from Ellyn Satter’s work around child feeding and it’s a great principle to incorporate into your feeding regime with your little ones to help set up a stress-free feeding environment.⁣

⁣If you want to help your little one to have a healthy relationship with food then allow your child to decide: if they want to eat and how much they want to eat at mealtimes. You are still the parent and need to provide structure around mealtimes. Setting regular mealtimes (the when of feeding) at the table in their highchair (the where of feeding) and provide nutritious foods for your child (the what of feeding). Then you can sit back and allow your child to decide if and how much they want to eat. This takes the pressure off the child and allows them to become more open to exploring and being curious about food and can help with food acceptance. Following your child’s lead while feeding helps them to stay in tune with their hunger and fullness signals promoting a healthy relationship with food long term.⁣

Do you ever catch yourself saying to your child “just take one more bite”? It might be of their vegetables or the protein part of their meal. ⁣

⁣Parents say this for a number of reasons. It could be because they are worried that their child isn’t eating enough and won’t have enough nutrition or it could be because they don’t like to see their children wasting food. ⁣

⁣Whilst there is a good intention behind this statement. It can have a negative impact on feeding. Often the parent and child get into a battle and it can take the fun out of the mealtime. If your child is already full and is pressured to have one more bite it teaches them to override their internal hunger and fullness signals which can lead to overeating down the track. ⁣

⁣Try instead dropping the battle and trusting in your child’s internal cues.

So excited to be speaking at this Mumma’s summit. Supporting mummas to navigate motherhood during these challenging times. Speaking alongside a range of experts talking all things pregnancy, postpartum, motherhood and babies and toddlers. And yours truly of course is talking all things nutrition during the first 1000 days.

Hello world. While we have all been isolating, and there has been both a quiet introspective calm for many, there has certainly been a raise in anxiety for others. When the world asked us to isolate, I was torn, because while we need to do this, pregnancy and postpartum is a time that I feel that social connection, and you having access to your tribe is an ' essential service'. Every business that ever supported mamas in pregnancy, birth and postpartum believes this at their very core.
You need and deserve support!! And so a project was born.
I have been isolating even deeper, in a quiet room in my home as I have reached out to other businesses, other women who all share a common goal.....we support you Mama, in pregnancy, in birth, in your newly postpartum weeks, your early postpartum years, and with postpartum being for life, our goal is to see you live your postpartum life at its very best. And with the very best support when you need it.

So we we have been talking. Each business, each woman has shared her unique knowledge and wisdom on specific topics, a huge variety of topics, and all of them to support you in one (or more) of these most important and life changing moments in YOUR journey into motherhood.

We all hold common belief that you are the best person to choose your best path for yourself, your baby, your family.

We all hold common belief that you need and deserve a supportive village as global tradition shows us is necessary. You need the aunties, the mamas, the sisters, and the other mamas sharing this journey. You need them to support you physically, mentally and emotionally. You need them to hear their knowledge and wisdom, NOT so that they can tell you what you must do. So that you are informed. When you know more, you can then begin to make choices for yourself that are yours....you are no longer just doing what you are told because you had no idea there was any other option.

The village wisdom is shared so you are empowered to make choose your own best path.

So we have come together to talk, to share a wealth of knowledge and wisdom, and to allow you an opportunity to listen and feel what feels right for you. To empower you with options and ideas and knowledge. Then to give you a big virtual hug and let you make your own decisions, knowing that we are all right here if you ever feel the need to reach out. Virtually or face to face. YOU. HAVE. OPTIONS.

We are showing up for you as a summit of speakers, and more. We will share our talks, and invite you to connect with other mamas, parents, carers to further talk and share your thoughts and experiences and fears and wins. We invite you to connect with other mamas and grow your other mama tribe. Because mama your journey is so much more fun and powerful when you find your tribe.

Are you keen to join our community. Our summit starts soon, and we want you in our circle. Click on the link if you are interested, and you'll be the first to know when the date (super soon) is set. And stay tuned here as I introduce you to all of our amazing speakers one by one so you get to know them, and what they will be sharing with you.

It's going to be amazing. I hope to see you in there. Xx
