Has Valentine’s Day got you thinking about matters of the heart? We turned to Buderim cardiologist, Dr Alana Harris, to answer a few common heart health questions.
💙 When should we be concerned and see a doctor about a fast or skipping heartbeat?
A fast or erratic heartbeat can be a sign of cardiac arrhythmia. While an ECG is the best way of diagnosing an arrhythmia, your smart watch or blood pressure machine can also give useful information. If your heart feels too fast, too slow, like it’s skipping beats, or if something just doesn’t feel right, book an appointment to speak with your doctor.
💙 What are some things people can start doing today to help improve their heart health?
Eating a healthy diet and losing weight if needed, regular exercise and physical activity, reducing alcohol consumption and quitting smoking are all lifestyle habits we can work on every day to help improve heart health and reduce the risk of heart disease.
💙 What are the cardiac red flags or symptoms we should be aware of?
Palpitations (a sensation of your heart beating abnormally), chest discomfort (it does not have to be pain), shortness of breath and light-headedness or blackouts. If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, you should seek medical advice.
This Valentine’s Day, give your heart health the attention it deserves. Speak to your GP about a heart health check-up and always seek medical advice if you have concerns.
