Speechie Tip! - Setting Effective Goals

The key to impactful therapy? Setting goals that are clear, strength-based, and child-centred. Think of goals as the lens guiding each session. By shifting the focus to a child’s abilities, even familiar activities can lead to new and meaningful progress.

Start by identifying what the child can do—whether it’s shared attention, turn-taking, or using single words. Then, consider the supports that help them succeed. Do they respond well to gestures, prompts, modelling, or visuals? Set goals that encourage them to build on these skills, even if they need support initially. Over time, you can gradually reduce these supports as the child gains confidence and independence in their abilities.

Keeping goals simple, positive, and focused on achievable steps allows for steady, meaningful progress. Let’s celebrate each step forward and stay focused on the unique strengths every child brings! 💡

🌟 Boosting Your Child's Literacy Skills at Home! 🌟

Did you know that everyday activities can help build your child's reading and writing abilities?

Here are some easy, fun ways to support your child's literacy at home:

Read Together Daily: Even if it's just for 10 minutes, reading aloud helps kids learn new words and understand story structure. 📖

Play Word Games: Try games like "I Spy" with letters and sounds (e.g., "I spy something that starts with 'S'!")

Label the World: Point out words in your environment, like on signs or packages. This helps kids see how reading fits into daily life!

Let Them "Write": Whether it’s scribbling, drawing, or writing letters, any practice with a pencil helps build early writing skills.

Your everyday interactions can spark a love for reading! 🔥 Let’s help our little ones grow into confident readers, one step at a time. ❤️

Spring is well and truly upon us. Need some tips to inspire communication?

1. Flower Description Game 🌸
Activity: Show your child pictures of different flowers or take a walk outside to see real ones. Ask them to describe the flowers using adjectives (color, size, shape).
Target Skills: Descriptive language, expanding vocabulary.
Example: What colour is the flower?” “Is the flower tall or short?” “How does it smell?”

2. Garden Sequencing Activity 🌱
Activity: Create a sequence of events related to planting a garden. Use picture cards or drawings and have your child put them in the correct order.
Target Skills: Sequencing, storytelling, logical thinking.
Example: “First, we dig the hole. Then, we plant the seed. Finally, we water the plant.”

3. Spring-Themed “Wh” Questions 🦋
Activity: While playing outside or looking at spring-related pictures, ask your child "Wh" questions about springtime.
Target Skills: Answering “Wh” questions, comprehension.
Example Questions: “What do butterflies eat?” “Where do flowers grow?” “Why do we wear sunglasses in the spring?”

4. Butterfly Life Cycle Story 🦋
Activity: Teach your child about the butterfly’s life cycle using pictures or a craft. Then, have them retell the story of the butterfly’s transformation.
Target Skills: Narrative skills, sequencing, retelling.
Example: “First, the butterfly is an egg. Then, it becomes a caterpillar. Next, it forms a chrysalis. Finally, it turns into a butterfly.”

5. Spring Scavenger Hunt 🌿
Activity: Create a spring-themed scavenger hunt. Ask your child to find spring-related items (e.g., a bird, a flower, a leaf) and describe or name each one.
Target Skills: Vocabulary development, following directions, expressive language.
Example: “Can you find a yellow flower?” “What sound does the bird make?”

"My child has just been diagnosed with Autism—what now?"

Receiving an Autism diagnosis can feel overwhelming, but it's important to remember that this is just the beginning of a new and empowering journey for both you and your child. 💙

Here are some helpful steps to support your child's growth and embrace their strengths:

1. Celebrate Your Child's Strengths: Every child is different, and Autism is just one aspect of who they are. Focus on their amazing qualities—whether it's creativity, a love for patterns, or incredible memory skills.

2. Build a Support Team: Surround yourself with people who can support both you and your child. This might include therapists, educators, doctors, or other families with similar experiences. Go with your gut- If your child and your are excited to see this person- it’s always a good sign!

3. Advocate & Educate: Learn about Autism and advocate for your child's needs in school, therapy, and the community. You know your child best, and your voice matters. Refer to the following websites: AMAZE, Vic Gov-understanding Autism, Autism Awareness Australia, Raising Children Network

Most importantly, remember: Autism is a different way of thinking, and your child has a bright future ahead. Together, we can foster understanding, inclusion, and acceptance. 💛

Building Confidence in Literacy!

Learning to read and write can be challenging for some kids, leading to low motivation or even frustration with school. As speech pathologists, our goal is to build confidence by thoroughly assessing each child's literacy skills and understanding of sounds and their purposes. This helps us pinpoint where the difficulty lies so we can provide targeted support that meets them right where they are!

How We Support Literacy Growth:

Instead of focusing on what’s “expected” for their age, we break tasks down into small, manageable steps that are achievable for them. This tailored approach helps boost confidence and creates a positive learning experience.

Example:
Meet Lucy, a 7-year-old who struggled with reading at grade level and often refused to read out loud in class. After assessing her literacy skills, we discovered she had difficulty with phonemic awareness—the ability to hear and manipulate individual sounds in words.

Our Approach:

Starting with the Basics: We began with simple sound games, focusing on identifying and matching sounds in a fun and engaging way. For example, playing a game where Lucy matched objects (like a ball, bat, and bell) with their initial sounds.

Building Up Gradually: Once she felt confident with sounds, we moved on to blending sounds together to form simple words, celebrating each small success to boost her motivation.

Creating a Positive Environment: Throughout the process, we emphasized her strengths and created a positive, pressure-free learning environment. We encouraged Lucy to celebrate her progress, no matter how small, and she started to feel more confident in her abilities.

The Result:
With time and targeted support, Lucy began to enjoy reading again and even volunteered to read aloud during class. By meeting her where she was and breaking down tasks into small, achievable steps, we helped Lucy rebuild her confidence and find joy in literacy.

Remember, every child learns at their own pace, and it's important to celebrate all their achievements, big or small! 🌟
