Retanne O'Leary, Psychologist My name is Retanne and I am a practicing Psychologist registered with AHPRA. Please feel free to contact reception on 90414141 to book an appointment.

I am a trauma informed psychologist, who has extensive experience providing therapeutic intervention for mood, anxiety and emotional regulation difficulties, parenting support, and interpersonal relationship difficulties. In my clinical work, I help clients deepen their understanding and awareness of their cognitive thought patterns and emotional responses, and explore the connections with past ex

periences, facilitating internal change and transformation. I strongly believe that therapeutic work originates from the self and then positively impacts all other areas of one’s life. I have a particular interest in autism, where interventions focuses upon helping families, to manage behaviours of concern, and helping individuals to develop skills to improve social interactions and to regulate emotions. I am dedicated to assisting families to gain a greater understanding of the individual’s autism and the impact this may have upon their learning, development and behaviour. I am now practicing at Highfield Park Medical Centre, 872 Riversdale Road, Camberwell, Victoria 3124, on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays and being new to this location I have capacity to take on more clients. Medicare rebates apply for part of the session cost for eligible clients.

Strategies of emotion regulation.:
Technique: Seeing that our emotions are temporary.

One of the fears that people have is that their painful emotions are unending and will pervade their entire day. This then makes them want to get rid of the emotion, which usually results in greater frustration, anxiety, and intolerance of emotion.

By using the technique of finding that emotions are temporary, a person may be guided in taking a mindful observing stance toward
their emotion and recording the different emotions and their intensity during the course of the day. This allows them to see that a full range of positive, negative, and neutral emotions occur and that emotions are like worries: They change and dissipate.

Question: Are there specific things that you are doing or thinking that are related to your feelings fluctuating?

Some may believe that claiming emotions are temporary minimizes the pain that they experience and invalidates their emotional suffering. The emphasis here is the interaction between change and validation, between actively moving forward while validating what has happened in the past.
