smile together Eat.Move.Smile. is a program supported by the Health Promotion Department of Swan Hill District Health.

We are working towards the highest levels of health and happiness for the Swan Hill and surrounding community by providing information on all aspects of health. Our 3 key priority areas for promotion are:

EAT fruit & veg
MOVE more often
SMILE together

These areas target the key messages from current Health Promotion Plan of Swan Hill District Health under promoting healthy lifestyles with a focus on nutrition, oral health, physical activity, inclusion, participation and equity. The program has been running since 2013 and aims to provide the best and most up to date information on health living programs and knowledge to educate and support the Swan Hill and District community. Based in Swan Hill we aim to keep as much of our information as local as possible while sharing reputable information sources across the country and the globe. This week we’re celebrating connection and support found in our local breastfeeding group. Whether it’s your first baby or your fifth, breastfeeding can come with challenges — and no one should feel like they have to do it alone.

Has your child talked about seeing Leo our dragon or Digby our dog brush puppets at Long Day Care, Kinder or Family Daycare?

The Health Promotion team at Swan Hill District Health coordinate the Dental Health Services Victoria program, Smiles 4 Miles. The program is delivered to Kinders, Long Day Care and Family Day Cares.

During term 3, Swan Hill District Health Dental Services and Health Promotion provide dental screenings in Kinders and Long Day Care to children aged 3 plus. These screenings give children an opportunity to experience a dental check in a comfortable environment with their peers. Additionally Health Promotion Officer, Bronte and Leo the dragon puppet talk to the children about brushing teeth! Leanne visits all Family Daycares this term with Digby the dog to promote and teach children about the importance of brushing teeth! These visits are so much fun and such a great way to foster positive oral health care from the start.

Dental Health Week runs from Monday the 4th of August to Sunday 10th of August. This year’s theme focuses on the importance of children’s oral health milestones, educating parents and caregivers about what they need to do to help their kids “reach every S-milestone", taking them on a journey from birth through their initial teeth and beyond.

Some S-miletones that this week promotes are:
- Birth to first tooth: clean gums with a soft damp cloth.
- First tooth to 18 months: brush twice daily with water and take children for their first dental visit.
- 18 months to 6 years: help brush children’s teeth with children’s low fluoride toothpaste and have regular dental visits.
- From 6 years: help brush children’s teeth with adult high-fluoride toothpaste and continue regular dental visits.

This year's theme "Prioritise Breastfeeding: Create sustainable support systems", highlights the impact that communities coming together to support breastfeeding mothers can have and how the benefits can last generations.💚

Our local Breastfeeding Group is back on tomorrow from 9:30am-11am at the Family and Child Hub! Our lovely lactation consultant can't make it this week, but don't worry - we've got a special guest joining us instead.

We will be having a visit from an accredited dietitian who will be able to answer questions about nutrition for both you and your baby. Come along to chat with other mums whether you are breastfeeding, mixed feeding or just want to connect. 😊
