A statement from Ambulance Victoria CEO Jordan Emery

I am sickened by the serious and deeply distressing occupational violence incident involving one of our paramedics in Melbourne today.

This morning, one of our MICA paramedics was stabbed while in uniform on duty.

He is stable and in hospital, receiving full medical care as well as support from Ambulance Victoria and the Victorian Ambulance Union.

I want to acknowledge his Ambulance Victoria colleagues who came to his aid, and our colleagues from Victoria Police and the member of the public who intervened.

I have visited him this afternoon and he’s in good spirits while receiving treatment, and we will continue to support him and his family throughout his recovery. Our priority is, and will continue to be, his care, safety and wellbeing.

I want to say this clearly and unequivocally that no paramedic or first responder should ever come to work and be assaulted. I am sickened to my stomach. We’ve had enough. This is appalling and unacceptable and needs to stop.

We will continue to support our paramedic, his family, our colleagues and our partners at Triple Zero Victoria and Victoria Police.

A big thank you to all the amazing mums who joined us for our B.U.S.H Mums First Aid & CPR night πŸ’›

It was such a lovely evening β€” great to see everyone come together, learn new skills, and build confidence in caring for their families and our community.

A special thank you to Sue and Mike for doing such an incredible job facilitating the session. We’re so grateful for your time, knowledge, and the way you made everyone feel comfortable and supported.

We’re already looking forward to the next one!

β€˜I shall never forget the shock when we saw the men arrive covered in blood, most of them with half their uniform shot or torn away. By night we had over 500 patients and only three nurses and two orderlies to cope with the work.’ - Alice Ross-King

β€˜I worked for 56 hours without a spell…I shall never forget the experiences of those days. The agonies of the poor fellows as they were lifted from the ambulances and also when their wounds were being dressed, were dreadful. I have been here ten weeks now but not till last week did I realise what war meant.’ - nurse Eileen Ferguson

β€˜Where there was life, there was hope, and we won.’ -Sister May Tilton, October 1917.

β€˜I have never regretted that I took the notion into my head to take on nursing, for it has opened up opportunities that I would never have had.’ - Sister Jessie Tomlins

Their sacrifice and experiences are unthinkable.

Their stories are unimaginable. They must never be forgotten.

During World War I, more than 2286 Australian nurses served abroad. Twenty-five died in service while 388 nurses were decorated for their courage. We recognise the nurses’ work and their sacrifice.

Lest we forget on ANZAC Day.

To all our valued members and community partners, the SCBNC has had to make the difficult decision to cease its after-hours and on-call services as of May 1 2026 due to funding and workforce constraints.

We welcome you to join us at our community meeting on Monday 20 April to talk through these changes and its impact on our community.
