Australia is in the middle of a surge in measles cases amid a global spike and declining childhood vaccination rates. So what precautions should be taken to avoid widespread transmission?

NSW Health is advising people to be alert for signs and symptoms of measles after being notified of a confirmed case who was infectious on an international flight and while visiting several locations in Sydney.

The case recently returned from Vietnam, where there is an ongoing large outbreak of measles.

People who were on board the below flight or attended the following locations at the times stated should watch for the development of symptoms. These locations do not pose an ongoing risk.

Monday 10 March:
- Jetstar flight JQ62 departed Ho Chi Minh City at 10:40pm on Sunday 9 March, arriving in Sydney at 11am on Monday 10 March
- Sydney International Airport arrivals terminal and baggage claim from 11am to 1pm
- 169 Cafe, Alison Road, Randwick from 1:30pm to 2:05pm
- OOSHMAN MAROUBRA, Pacific Square, 737 Anzac Parade, Maroubra from 8:30pm to 9:30pm

Thursday 13 March:
- Matraville Medical Complex, 492 Bunnerong Road, Matraville from 12:30pm to 1:30pm
- HealthSave Pharmacy, 496 Bunnerong Road, Matraville from 1pm to 1:35pm

Friday 14 March:
- Matraville Medical Complex, 492 Bunnerong Road, Matraville from 1:55pm to 2:35pm

Saturday 15 March:
- Matraville Medical Complex, 492 Bunnerong Road, Matraville from 9:50am to 10:50am
- Princes of Wales Hospital Emergency Department waiting room from 10:15am to 1:30pm

We are thrilled to welcome Dr Jaiti Khosla to our team.

Dr Khosla completed her medical degree at the University of Newcastle
She has completed the Certificate of Dermoscopy from the Skin Cancer College of Australasia. Her interests in General Practice include:

• Paediatrics
• Workers’ Compensation

Australian adults will be able to get fifth dose of COVID-19 vaccine later this month.
It will be available from 20th February for all adults over 18 who haven’t had a booster or had COVID in the last 6 months

ATAGI recommends all people aged 18 and over, who have not had either a COVID-19 vaccine or confirmed coronavirus case in the last six months, get their latest shot from February 20.

NSW is experiencing a significant rise in the number of gastro cases reported across the state, with health authorities warning residents to be on alert for symptoms of the highly infectious virus.

Rotavirus is a virus that causes severe gastroenteritis in babies and young children. All young children should receive the rotavirus vaccine at 6 weeks and 4 months of age. Anyone between 18 and 30 can get a third COVID vaccine, Anyone over 30 can get a 4th Vaccine. Anyone over 16 who has a disability or health condition can get a 4th Vaccine. The only people who can get a 5th Vaccine are people who are immunocompromised.
