Part 2 of our blog on Confucian parenting is out now! Link in bio.
Confucianism has given us tight-knit families, people we can turn to for support, and considerate/thoughtful behaviour. But, it can come with perfectionism and strong adherence to hierarchies. Does any of this sound familiar to you?
Check out our blog for more! Look out for the final part of the blog next week!

New blog out now! Link in bio
If you have Chinese, Korean, Japanese, and/or Vietnamese heritage, then the way your family works is probably influenced by Confucianism (whether your family realises or not). In the next few weeks, we'll be putting out blogs that explain what Confucian parenting is, how it impacts us, and how it can be balanced with different cultures' values.

If you're watching or movies like these, it's a good sign that you're open to connecting with culture and supporting your mental health. Jentry Chau vs The Underworld, Nezha, and KPop Demon Hunters all explore the thoughts and emotions that we experience that affect our mental health in our communities. They show us how, when unaddressed or suppressed, we can use defence mechanisms like denial or projecting our issues onto other people.
Here are some initial reactions. See for a more detailed analysis of KPop Demon Hunters

'All That's Left Unsaid' by continues to highlight important moments in the lives of Asian Australians. Our relationships with our parents are complicated, especially if we've grown up amongst people from very different cultures to our parents and if we've grown up on Hollywood movies. This attitude that Ky experiences is achievable! Reach out if you want support with this!

Coming from an ethnic family, we've been taught to prioritise group harmony over our own needs, we've been set high expectations, we try not to disappoint others, and we feel pressure to conform. A lot of what we've felt is being spelled out in research and shows why our mental health is impacted. Here's my take on what one study found.

Here's an example of how people pleasing can look. It could be avoiding confrontation, saying sorry a lot, being the scapegoat in the family, choosing the career our parents want, saying yes to things we don't want to, seeking external validation from bosses or parents, feeling guilt when we feel we haven't met others' expectations, constantly thinking "what will people think?" and avoiding judgement.
No matter the situation, we can break out of the pattern, feel better about ourselves, and live life more in line with ourselves. Reach out if this is something you'd like help with!
