This season of self care and restoration has brought me some new lessons, and reminded me of some older ones.

Life is never straightforward, and old stories show up to be rewritten when we’re ready.

Whether it’s choosing your priorities, remembering to do the work for that thing you want to change, allowing others to help and support you, or the old listening to your body thing; they’re there to tell you something if you’re willing to listen. 💚

Wherever you go, your breath is with you, so it’s a great tool to support your wellbeing wherever you are.

😮‍💨 Try this recovery breathwork exercise;
- Take a normal breath in and out through the nose
- Pinch your nose to hold the breath for 5 seconds
- Let go of your nose, breathe in and out through your nose for 10 seconds, breathing as normal

🔁 Repeat as many times as you like, ideally for 3 minutes or so.

‼️It’s not meant to feel stressful, so if it does, lessen the hold time to 3 seconds.

🪧 Signs your nervous system is responding:
- a sense of sleepiness
- increase in watery saliva in your mouth
- warmth in your hands and feet

Give it a go - it just may surprise you with its effectiveness.

If there was one thing I wish people understood about mental health, it would be this…

You never know who is struggling with their mental health.

Sometimes that person who looks like they have it all together, is struggling.
The high achieving person with goals and strategies; they can be struggling.
The kindest, most giving and seemingly unflappable person could be struggling.
That seemingly cold person who never shows their feelings could be struggling.
And that person who really looks like they’re struggling may really be struggling and need help.

So never assume someone is okay, or not okay, because you never know.
But you can ask, you can listen, you can empathise and give support. That could literally mean the world to someone.

To those struggling today, I see you and I’m here for you.
Mental illness sucks, and it’s not your fault.

Functional freeze is very real and just one type of shutdown state. Functional freeze is harder to identify at times, because essentially, someone in this state is still functioning (to some degree).

They’re showing up to work, looking after the kids, doing all the things. But inside, they’ve disassociated and zoned out, they can be stuck overthinking, feeling overwhelmed and often a sense of helpless.

You can’t you your way out of shutdown or functional freeze. This is our oldest form of self protection, which is to preserve as much of our life as we can while essentially submitting to the (real or perceived) threat.

💚 Gentleness is needed along with time and space.
🌤️ Warmth and heat may help.
🫂 Connection with others.
👀 Noticing sensations to bring one back into the here and now - textures, smells, sight, taste and sound.
🧍‍♀️Move from lying to sitting, or sitting to standing, supporting your body in standing tall and strong, to reclaim yourself.
⛺️A return to base camp; where you can reconnect with yourself, rediscover joy and gradually shift your way out of this state.

Your breath is amazing ✨

While everybody breathes, not everybody breathes well; and your breathing patterns have impacts throughout your body, not just on your breath.

That’s why I’m studying functional breathwork, because your breathing impacts your body. This way I can continue to help you beyond the studio walls, with even more science based techniques to support your health and wellbeing while living in this messy and stressy world.

That heaviness, the loud head, the brain fog or sense of being stuck doesn’t mean something is wrong with you; it’s your body talking to you, and your nervous system protecting you.

Taking a base camp day, or incorporating base camp elements within your day, is a great way to meet yourself where you’re at.

That may be;
⛺️ only doing what is necessary
⛺️ wearing comfy clothes, lazy hair, minimal makeup (if any)
⛺️ sunshine, nature, gentle movement
⛺️ expression through journalling, art or conversation
⛺️ connection with a trusted person, a pet or meaningful place
⛺️ time for things that bring you joy

Whatever your base camp looks like, after you spend some time there, I’m sure you’ll notice a difference in your body and mind.
