It's that time of year when the beginning of daylight savings is fast approaching. This Sunday 6th of October 2am becomes 3am creating more sunlight in the evening hours.
Moving the clock by one hour disrupts the bodies circadian rhythm (the internal light and dark cues for sleep and wake) and it may take several days to adjust. To help smooth the transition setting your bedtime (and rise time) earlier by 15 minutes each day for 3-4 nights in advance may help.

At the end of Daylight Savings (NSW, Victoria, South Australia & ACT) in Autumn (or Fall in North America) we turn our clocks back. This is scheduled for the first Sunday of April - 3am Sunday 7th April the clocks will turn back (or fall back) to 2am. Meaning; we all get an extra hour in bed.
Turning the clock back is not as disruptive to our internal body clock (circadian rhythm) as turning it forward in Spring. It’s easier to lengthen the day than it is to shorten it and it usually only takes one night to adjust to the end of Daylight Savings in Autumn.

Today is World Sleep Day 2024 - Friday, March 15 and it is the perfect opportunity to talk about how sleep is essential to health. Sleep is a critical pillar of health, like nutrition and physical activity. It helps to support memory and learning and clean waste from the brain. Not only that good quality sleep improves immunity and helps to maintain the cells in our body.
If you are concerned about your sleep health, talk to your GP, and consider how your lifestyle may be impacting your sleep.

The better you sleep at night, the better your brain will function, and the better you’ll feel. Learn about what goes on in the brain while you rest, the neg...

On Sunday 1st October at 2am, clocks will be turned forward one hour to 3am, meaning a loss of one hour sleep and the start of Daylight Savings Time.

Moving our clocks can disrupt our sleep patterns and our internal body clock or 24-hour circadian rhythm will have to adjust to the time shift. Although most people will do this without any problem, we do need to be aware that there is an increased chance of sleepiness while the body adjusts to the new timeframe.

Daylight saving throws our circadian rhythms out of sync because we are suddenly required to wake at a time when the body clock is still programmed for sleep. However, if you adjust your bedtime earlier for 3 or 4 nights before the Spring daylight savings transition, you will reduce the risk of sleep loss, and be less susceptible to sleepiness the following day.
