Physical health is important for emotional health and exercise can have significant benefits.

Exercise can help children to:

ยป Self-regulate and get the body and brain to calm down and resettle
ยป Improve focus and learning
ยป Improve sleep and energy levels
ยป Build self-esteem when they experience success in an area they love.
ยป Lift up mood as physical activity helps release the bodyโ€™s โ€œhappy chemicalsโ€
ยป Develop their social skills as well as peer and family connections

๐—ฅ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฒ๐—บ๐—ฏ๐—ฒ๐—ฟ:

Keep it fun and enjoyable. Exercise does not have to be scheduled, structured and expensive; backyard games, home family dance sessions, play in the park are a few examples.

Competitive team sports are not for every child and children's interests change over time.

Make it a family affair, that way it doubles up with emotionally connecting with your child, their siblings, grandparents, and extended family.

5 ways to support your child/young person's emotional wellbeing:

1. Creating a safe and loving home environment. Make the home a place where there is open communication but taking care about serious family issues such as major health issues, marital problems or financial issues as these may worry some children.

2. "A family that plays together stays together". Simplistic as it may sound, this is a powerful tool to create family togetherness and a sense of belonging.

3. "A family that eats together stays together". Strong bonds are made when we share a meal and share the day's experiences.

4. Recognise effort as well as achievement and give praise when appropriate. Show interest in your child's interests, activities and friendships.

5. Recognise when professional help is needed and support your child/young person through this process as it can be overwhelming to speak to unfamiliar people about feelings.

Physical activity helps infants with their overall health and wellbeing and reaching their developmental milestones.

It is recommended that infants participate in supervised interactive floor-based play in safe environments from birth.

This may include:

> reaching and grasping
> pushing and pulling
> crawling
> For those not yet mobile, at least 30 minutes of tummy time spread throughout the day during awake periods

Remember to keep it fun, stimulating and engaging! Use 30 minutes as minimum guide however more is better!

Sleep is important for a childโ€™s overall health, development, and wellbeing.

Children can sometimes have trouble getting to and staying asleep.

Many factors influence a childโ€™s sleep including bedtime routine, sleep environment, diet, and physical activity.

Promoting good sleep habits like having a routine and making some small lifestyle changes may alleviate some of the difficulties.

- Allowing about an hour of quiet time for your child to wind down for sleep, with reduced noise, light (including screens) and activity before bed.

- Adjust the room temperature (if possible) so that your child is comfortable in their room.

- If possible, avoid eating too close to bedtime and avoid caffeinated, sugary or high energy foods and drinks.

- Day time physical activity and exposure to natural light promotes tiredness at night and allows your child to get a fuller sleep. It is recommended that children get at least 60 minutes of moderate to vigorous physical activity every day.

Sleep issues may also be caused by underlying illnesses, health conditions or anxiety for which you may need to talk with you GP or Paediatrician, particularly if sleep problems persist or worsen.
