Iron Deficiency

Feeling unusually tired, breathless walking up stairs, or noticing pale skin? Iron deficiency is one of the more common reasons β€” and it’s often missed.
Who is more at risk?
πŸƒ Women with heavy periods
πŸƒ Pregnant women
πŸƒ Teenagers during growth spurts
πŸƒ Endurance athletes
πŸƒ People on plant-based diets
Iron-rich foods include lean red meat, leafy greens, lentils, chickpeas, eggs, and dried apricots. A simple blood test can check your iron stores, and your GP can help work out the cause and the right next steps.

Vitamin D & Winter Sunshine

As the days get shorter, our vitamin D levels can quietly dip. Vitamin D plays an important role in supporting strong bones, healthy muscles, and a well-functioning immune system.
You can support your levels through:
🌞 Short bursts of safe sun exposure (a brisk walk on the way to work or at lunchtime)
πŸ₯š Foods like oily fish, eggs, and fortified milk
🩺 A blood test if you’re concerned β€” your GP can help interpret the result
People at higher risk of low vitamin D include those who spend most of their time indoors, people who cover their skin for cultural or medical reasons, and older adults.

New: Needle-Free Flu Vaccine for Kids
For the first time in Australia, a needle-free flu vaccine option is available for children.

The nasal spray flu vaccine is registered for children and adolescents aged 2 to 17 years. Instead of an injection, it's administered as a simple spray in each nostril.

In NSW, the nasal spray flu vaccine is fully funded for children aged 2, 3 and 4. For children aged 5 to 17, it's available privately through your GP.

A few things to know:

The nasal spray is a live attenuated vaccine β€” it contains a weakened form of the virus that helps train the immune system. It does not cause influenza.

ATAGI considers it to have comparable effectiveness to standard injectable flu vaccines

It is not suitable for children with moderate or severe immune conditions β€” your GP can advise on the best option for your child

This needle-free option has been used safely in millions of children overseas for over a decade.

Speak with your GP about whether the nasal spray flu vaccine is appropriate for your child.

Why Get a Flu Vaccine?

Influenza is more than just a bad cold. It's a serious respiratory illness that can lead to hospitalisation β€” particularly for young children, older adults, pregnant women, and people with chronic conditions.

Here's what the flu vaccine does:

Reduces your risk of serious illness, hospitalisation, and complications from influenza

Helps protect the people around you β€” including those who may be more vulnerable

Is especially important for young children and older adults, who are at higher risk

Is updated every year to match the influenza strains expected to circulate that season

In 2026, all flu vaccines in Australia are trivalent (covering two influenza A strains and one B strain), in line with World Health Organization recommendations.

ATAGI recommends vaccination from April to ensure protection ahead of the winter flu season.

2026 Flu Vaccines Are Here

The 2026 flu vaccines have arrived at My Family Doctors.

This year we have both government funded (National Immunisation Program) and private vaccine options available. Annual influenza vaccination is recommended by ATAGI for everyone aged 6 months and over.

Australia recorded over 1,700 influenza-associated deaths in 2025 β€” the highest in more than 25 years. Vaccination remains the most effective way to reduce the risk of serious illness from influenza.

Whether you're eligible for a free vaccine or prefer a private option, speak with your GP about which flu vaccine is right for you and your family.

Hand Washing: Your Best Defence
It sounds basic, but hand washing is still one of the most effective ways to prevent the spread of infections β€” including colds, flu, and gastro.

Here's what good hand hygiene looks like:

Wash for at least 20 seconds with soap and water (about the time it takes to hum "Happy Birthday" twice)

Always wash before eating and after using the bathroom

Wash after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose

Soap and water is more effective than hand sanitiser β€” sanitiser is a good backup when you're out, but it doesn't replace proper washing

This is especially important during autumn and winter when respiratory infections peak. Teaching kids good hand washing habits early is one of the best things you can do for the whole family.

The Underrated Power of Walking
Walking is one of the simplest, most accessible forms of exercise β€” and the health benefits are seriously underrated.
Regular walking has been shown to:

Lower blood pressure and blood sugar levels

Improve mood and reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression

Support joint and bone health, especially as you age

Help with weight management and cardiovascular fitness

You don't need to run a marathon. Just 30 minutes of brisk walking most days can make a meaningful difference to your health.

And the best part β€” it's free, it doesn't require equipment, and you can do it anywhere. A morning walk around the Bay Run is a pretty good way to start the day.
