A speech pathologist can help determine your child’s level of understanding when it comes to following instructions.

👂Where might the breakdown be happening?
• Limited vocabulary
• Difficulty with positional concepts (e.g. under, between, in, on)
• Trouble with two or multi stepdirections due to working memory challenges

Once we identify the area of difficulty, we use fun, play-based methods to teach your child what’s missing. One example is barrier games like the one pictured, interactive activities where a barrier is placed between two players, and the child must give or follow instructions to complete a task. For example, here the speech pathologist might say “Put the turtle under the boat” and both players check to see if their pictures match. It’s a playful way to strengthen listening, comprehension, and expressive skills!

Does your preschool-aged child stutter? 💭

While natural recovery from early stuttering does sometimes occur, we can’t predict which children will recover and which may continue to stutter without support.

That’s where the Lidcombe Program comes in. Backed by research and recognised as the gold standard for preschool stuttering therapy, studies show that children who take part in the program experience significant reductions in stuttering severity.

Our team at Speech & Growth Clinic is fully trained in delivering this program and supporting families every step of the way! Contact us to learn more 📩

The most powerful thing yourcan do for your child’s brain?
Taking the time to sit and read! The single biggest predictor of high academic achievement is READING to children!

Not flashcards.
Not apps.
Not fancy programs.

It’s you... sitting down with a book. If child struggles with attention during book reading - try props to bring the story to life!

Would you like an objective measure of your child’s understanding and talking skills?

At Speech & Growing Clinic, we use the CELF-P3 (Clinical Evaluation of Language Fundamentals – Preschool, 3rd Edition) as part of our preschool language assessments.

This assessment looks at the key skills preschoolers need to meet the language demands of the classroom, such as:
👂 Following instructions
🗣️ Building sentences
📚 Remembering and recalling information
🤝 Using language to connect with others

Because the CELF-P3 is standardised, your child’s results are compared to a large sample of children the same age across Australia. This gives us a clear picture of their strengths and areas for support, helping us create therapy goals tailored just for them. Contact us to find out more!

It’s one thing for a child to sing a song, but it’s another for them to show deeper comprehension by acting it out! 🎶

Take Five Little Monkeys Jumping on the Bed:
When a child pretends to jump, fall, or call the doctor, they’re practicing:
🧠 Receptive language — understanding the words and actions in the song
📖 Sequencing — following the story as each monkey falls off in order
💬 Vocabulary growth — learning action words like jump, fall, call
🎭 Symbolic play — using imagination to connect words, actions, and meaning

Research in speech pathology indicates that the use of visuals and props (like toys, puppets, or gestures) is highly important for supporting memory, comprehension, and language learning.

👉 You can try this at home using animal figurines, hand puppets, or even soft toys to act out the story.

At Speech & Growth Clinic, therapy frequently involves constructive play - a powerful way to grow thinking skills, vocabulary, and sentence building. 🦾🤖👷

One of our little engineers used his cognitive skills and language to bring a robot to life. We modelled and heard amazing sentences like, “Let’s build the arms!” and “We need more blocks!” as he problem-solved, planned, and communicated his ideas. We love using in our sessions!

One of the most functional and important skills a child can learn is how to ask for what they need - often called “requesting language.” This could be asking for more food, a favourite toy, or help from an adult.

To encourage this, choose an activity your child is genuinely interested in. For example, when playing with Mr Potato Head, keep some pieces aside so your child needs to ask for them. These small “communication temptations” create natural opportunities for language learning.

Model helpful request phrases over and over again, such as:
🗣️ “More.”
🗣️ “I want the eyes.”
🗣️ “Can I have the eyes?”

When we pair a motivating activity with rich language modelling, we set the stage for confident and purposeful communication.

Curious about stuttering therapy?

The Lidcombe Program is the gold standard for treating stuttering in preschool-aged children. Research shows that children treated with the program are 7.5 times more likely to have their stutter significantly reduced or eliminated.

At Speech & Growth Clinic, Cassandra is Lidcombe trained and passionate about supporting parents every step of the way.

Want to help your child’s speech clarity at home?

Try modelling the correct sounds during everyday conversations - no pressure for your child to copy, just let them hear it.

Child: “That’s my tup.”
You: “Yes, your cup is on the table.”

They’re always listening and learning. Emphasise and stretch the mispronounced sound.

Child: “it’s a nake!”
You: “Did you mean sssssssnake?”

Little moments like these build awareness of sounds and encourage confident communication.

How do I respond when my toddler is upset? 🤯

Start with the 3 R’s: Regulate, Relate, Reason - a powerful framework developed by Dr Bruce Perry.

When children are upset, their brains cannot process long explanations or instructions - no matter how logical we think we’re being.

❌ “You need to stop crying, use your words, and tell me what’s wrong so I can help you.”
❌ “There’s nothing to be scared of, it’s just a loud noise. You’re fine!”

These kinds of responses are often too much for a dysregulated child.

✅ Instead: Minimise your language. “Johnny is sad.”
✅ Keep it short and use a positive tone. “I’m here.”
✅ Focus on safety and connection. “Big hug?”

Only once they’re calm, can they begin to reason and understand. Then you can reason with them, “First eat, then play”

Let’s support emotional development by using the right type of communication and meeting them where they’re at.
