Meet Ruth - Senior Speech Pathologist here at Care2Communicate 💬

Ruth’s passion for speech pathology began close to home. Growing up with a family member who had a learning disability, she often sat in on his therapy sessions, sometimes even joining in. During what was a challenging time for her family, the care and support they received from his speech therapist left a lasting impression 💛 It inspired Ruth to become that kind of therapist, someone who offers guidance, compassion, and unwavering support to every client and family she works with.

What Ruth loves most about her work?
🌈 Making a meaningful difference in people’s lives.
💡 Supporting clients as they find their voice, whether through speech or alternative communication.
🤝 Walking alongside families through every step of their journey.

Her special passion? Working with school-aged children and teenagers, helping them build the communication skills they need to thrive in both academic and social settings. For Ruth, it’s about more than therapy...it’s about helping kids and teens feel confident, capable, and understood.

If we had to sum up her therapy style in three words?
Motivating. Engaging. Supportive.

And if you’ve ever met Ruth, you’ll know those three words couldn’t be more spot-on ❤️

Ever heard the term Apraxia of Speech and wondered what it really means? Let’s break it down, parent-to-parent 💬💛

Apraxia is a motor speech disorder...which means there’s nothing wrong with your child’s muscles, but the brain has trouble planning and coordinating the movements needed to make sounds, syllables, and words.

Think of it like this: the “message” from the brain to the mouth is getting scrambled. Your child knows what they want to say, but their mouth can’t always get the words out the right way, at the right time.

💡 Key signs can include:
Inconsistent speech errors (saying the same word differently each time)
Difficulty moving smoothly from one sound to another
Groping movements with the mouth as they try to find the right position
Better understanding of language than ability to speak

The good news is that with the right support and LOTS of practice, children with apraxia can make AMAZING progress 🌈

At Care2Communicate, we use evidence-based, fun, and functional strategies to help kids find their voice...one step at a time ❤️

🏫 When it comes to supporting your child’s communication, teamwork really is the secret sauce, and teachers are one of your biggest allies 💛

Here’s how to build a strong partnership with your child’s teacher for the best outcomes:

🤝 Share openly – Let the teacher know about your child’s communication strengths, challenges, and any strategies you’ve found helpful at home.
📝 Set shared goals – Work together to agree on what’s most important for your child right now, whether that’s speech clarity, social skills, or classroom participation.
📅 Keep in touch – Regular updates (even quick check-ins) make a big difference. It helps everyone stay on the same page and adapt strategies as your child grows.
📚 Provide resources – Share tips from your speech pathologist, visuals, or communication tools so the teacher can use the same supports at school.
🌈 Celebrate wins together – Whether it’s speaking up in class, trying a new word, or joining a group activity, share the joy with your child’s teacher. It keeps the momentum going!

When home, school, and therapy are all pulling in the same direction, your child gets consistent support in every environment ❤️

🏡 Did you know your child’s best language-learning opportunities are often hiding in everyday moments? 💬✨

You don’t need flashcards or fancy activities...the magic happens in the car, at the shops, during bath time, and while cooking dinner 🍳🌈

Here’s how to turn the ordinary into language gold:

🛒 At the shops – name the items, talk about colours, count as you put things in the trolley.
🚗 In the car – play “I spy,” sing songs, or talk about where you’re going and what you see out the window.
🛁 Bath time – describe what’s happening (“wash hair,” “splash water”), talk about body parts, or make up silly rhymes.
🍽️ Mealtimes – chat about the food (“crunchy carrot,” “cold milk”), talk about what you’re doing (“cut apple,” “stir soup”).

The secret is to follow your child’s lead, add words to what they’re already interested in, and repeat, repeat, repeat ❤️

Language learning doesn’t have to feel like “homework”, it’s about connection, play, and making the most of the moments you already share!

🏡 Imagine speech therapy that comes to you...to your home, your child’s school, daycare, aged-care facility or even the local park 🌳

That’s the beauty of mobile therapy. It’s not just convenient (no racing across town or sitting in waiting rooms 🙌), it’s therapy delivered in the environments that matter most to you and your family.

Here’s why it works so well:

💬 Familiar surroundings = relaxed, happy clients (and more natural communication).
✨ Real-life practice – we can work on skills in the spaces and situations where they’re needed most.
🤝 Family involvement – see strategies in action and feel confident using them between sessions.

Whether it’s practicing speech sounds in the kitchen while making lunch, working on social skills at the playground, or helping with communication in the classroom, mobile therapy meets you where you are, literally ❤️

Because progress isn’t just made in the clinic… it’s made in your world 🌈

❤️ Did you know the way you praise your child can make a big difference to their confidence, especially for late talkers? 💬

When little ones are working hard to find their words, the right kind of praise can help them feel proud, motivated, and excited to keep trying.

✅ Praise the effort, not just the result
Instead of “Good talking!” try:
💡 “I love how you kept trying to say that!”
💡 “You used so many words to tell me your idea!”

✅ Be specific
Let them know exactly what they did well:
💡 “You said ‘banana’ so clearly!”
💡 “I love how you used your words to ask for more.”

✅ Celebrate all forms of communication
Words, gestures, pointing, pictures, it’s all communication. Show them it matters and is valued 💛

🚫 Avoid overcorrecting in the moment
If they mispronounce a word, model the correct version naturally in your reply, without stopping their flow.

The goal? To make talking feel safe, rewarding, and fun, so they’re excited to keep sharing their voice with the world.
