As the weather begins to change and the days are becoming warmer, does our mood actually improve with the arrival of spring and summer?
Although there is no direct evidence that warmer weather and sunlight improve our mood, better weather and more sunlight does provide us with other, indirect benefits.
For example, better weather allows people to go outside and enjoy nature. The time spent outside in a natural setting can then improve our mood, memory and broaden our thinking styles (openness to new information and creative thoughts).
Similarly, changes in the weather can have an effect on our mental health because of our expectations. We can develop a positive association and expectation of summer by associating it with positive experiences such as family vacations and beach trips. However, it is important to avoid falling into the expectation versus reality trap.
For example, when we are met with bad weather or obstacles such as lack of money to travel, we may become stressed because the reality does not match our expectations.
As a result, while there is no direct evidence that warmer weather affects our mood and behaviour, it does indirectly improve our mood by allowing us to engage with nature and form positive associations.
