✨Looking after your mental health during the festive season! ✨

1. Stay connected - Lots of people find the festive season difficult. Reaching out and talking about your feelings can improve your mood and make it easier to deal with tough times.
2. Ask for help - If you feel like it’s getting too much and you can’t cope, reach out for support. There are a number of support lines available 24 hours a day, 7 days per week.
- Lifeline: 13-11-14 (call/text/chat online)
- Beyond Blue: 1300-22-4636 (call/chat online)
- 13YARN: 13-92-76
- Open Arms: 1800-011-046
- 1800RESPECT: 1800-737-732 (call/text/chat online)
3. Recognise your warning signs - It is important to be aware of your signs of distress and use techniques that help you relax.
4. Do something you enjoy - Think about what you enjoy doing and do activities that you can lose yourself in. Enjoying yourself beats the stress.
5. Celebrate responsibly - Whilst it is enjoyable to have a drink with family and friends, alcohol can have adverse effects so it is important to know your limits to maintain your personal well-being.
6. Eat well, get enough sleep and keep active - The silly season wouldn’t be called ‘silly’ without a little overindulgence but a good tip is to balance this out over the festive period - everything in moderation. Balance delicious treats with healthy meal options, find time to undertake physical movement and ensure you get enough sleep.
7. Take a break and find time to relax - Pay attention to your energy levels and pace yourself. Whether you are spending time away from home or enjoying a stay-cation, re-energise by giving yourself a change of scene or pace.
8. Care for others - Present-buying is not the only way of showing that we care about others. The festive season is the perfect time to connect with your community and reach out to loved ones.
9. Express gratitude - Write down and think about something you are grateful for even if it is as simple as the sun shining or someone giving you way in traffic.
10. Be kind to yourself and others - Have compassion when planning what you will do this festive season.

Journaling for mental health.

Journaling or expressive writing involves writing down your thoughts and feelings.

"When I write I can shake off all my cares. My sorrow disappears, my spirits are revived. I can recapture everything when I write, my thoughts, my ideals and my fantasies." Anne Frank.

The benefits of journaling:
- A healthy and safe way for you to express yourself and process your emotions, often breaking away from the cycle of overthinking.
- It helps to develop insight about your mental health.
- It encourages acceptance of your mental state and become unstuck.
- Improves your physical health in that studies have shown people visit doctors less and take less sick days.

Tips on how to journal:
1. Take a small step: Starting with only one or two minutes per day.
2. Make it easy by picking the simplest tool: Keep a pen and paper handy or write your thoughts down in an electronic device such as, your phone, tablet, etc.
3. Let it all out: Take a few deep breaths and write, scribble or draw whatever feels right. Your journal does not need to have a certain structure, it is your private space to create and express whatever you like.
4. Develop a routine: Set a few minutes aside at the same time everyday to write which will help to develop the habit.
5. It is personal: Use your journal as you see fit. You don’t have to share it or you can if that feels right to you.

Prompts that may help getting started:
- This is what happened today.
- I’m experiencing these feelings about it.
- I’m thinking these thoughts.

As the weather begins to change and the days are becoming warmer, does our mood actually improve with the arrival of spring and summer?

Although there is no direct evidence that warmer weather and sunlight improve our mood, better weather and more sunlight does provide us with other, indirect benefits.

For example, better weather allows people to go outside and enjoy nature. The time spent outside in a natural setting can then improve our mood, memory and broaden our thinking styles (openness to new information and creative thoughts).

Similarly, changes in the weather can have an effect on our mental health because of our expectations. We can develop a positive association and expectation of summer by associating it with positive experiences such as family vacations and beach trips. However, it is important to avoid falling into the expectation versus reality trap.

For example, when we are met with bad weather or obstacles such as lack of money to travel, we may become stressed because the reality does not match our expectations.

As a result, while there is no direct evidence that warmer weather affects our mood and behaviour, it does indirectly improve our mood by allowing us to engage with nature and form positive associations.

Did you know your sleep and mental health are closely connected?

Sleep problems were traditionally considered to be a symptom of mental health issues. It is actually more complicated. Sleep problems also play a role in the development and continuation of mental health issues.

It is believed that having enough sleep is important in strengthening emotional resilience and managing the demands of a busy life. During sleep the brain is working to process information. A lack of sleep impacts this process and can influence your mood setting the stage for negative thinking, depression, anxiety and emotional vulnerability.

Did you know there is a direct link between what we eat and how we feel?

Mint is often used to reduce stress and rejuvenate the mind. Due to its calming aroma and adaptogenic properties, which regulate cortisol levels and build a natural resistance to stress, mint can assist in relaxing the body and calming the mind. Mint also has a very strong aroma which helps open up the airways and allows for relaxed breathing.

Due to its anti-inflammatory and anti-bacterial properties, there are also several health benefits to mint including soothing stomach aches, boosting your immune system, calming acne and skin blemishes, assisting with weight loss and lowering blood pressure.

If you are feeling stressed and want to enjoy the health benefits of mint, add some fresh mint leaves or mint extract to your bath water or place some in a diffuser. Alternatively, add some fresh mint leaves to hot water for a soothing drink.
