Life throws many obstacles our way, many moments that make us sad, angry or frustrated and even traumatic events. With time and the right support, these moments we have experienced can become easier to manage.

However, something may trigger a particular memory or feeling that can take us back right to that moment. And that is ok! We can heal from something but still get sad. We are only human after all. What we need to keep in mind is if those feelings are getting in the way of our daily lives. Reach out to a friend, family or professional to talk it out. 🍃

We can get so caught up chasing our “bigger” goals, focusing on the bigger life moments, we forget to appreciate the small wins, the small moments that made us smile or happy. We need to remember to feel grateful of our smaller achievements. Take the time to reflect on that at the end of the day and watch your outlook on life improve. 🍃

We have been conditioned by society to feel that, if we want to succeed in any part of our life, we must work ourselves into the ground. We must do more, work more, sacrifice more, always keep busy doing something. But why? Why can’t we have a balance? Why can’t we keep our work within the confines of our working hours?

We must prioritise self care, taking a break, taking mental health days, enjoying our hobbies and enjoying our life. There is no medal for burning out. Take care of yourself first. PC 🍃

Control. Humans love to be in control, whether it is something small like what to do in our day or what to eat compared to the bigger decisions in our life, like what career path we should take, or whom our life partner should be? We want to have agency over what we do and with our decisions. However, we can’t control everything that happens in our life or what happens in the world. The only thing we can control is the thoughts we have and our behaviours. It’s best to make peace with what’s happening in our head then try to control everything around us. Have a great day everyone.

It is so easy to fall into the trap of worrying and stressing over things that we don’t actually have any control over! What the weather will be like, what someone will say, do or what mood they will be in, how someone else treats you and their actions, the future, your basic needs for survival, the passing of time and the exact outcome of anything, ever! These are some things we don’t have control over and ruminating about these things can cause us a lot of grief, sadness and frustration. It is so much better to focus on the things we can control, like our thoughts, feelings and actions. Start to make these small changes in your daily life and notice the positive impact it has. 🍃

This is very true. During sessions with my clients I regularly tell them that they might not feel the best after the session, because we are actively talking about things that cause us discomfort. We are digging deep, we are discussing moments that have caused us pain and deep hurt. But that’s the point right? We can’t just skim the surface. Psychologists are here to give you the tools to manage the hard moments in life. 🍃

Whenever we feel an uncomfortable or unpleasant feeling, we want to suppress that feeling, make it go away, ignore it until it disappears. At the end of the day, we all just want to be happy right? But it’s important to remember that whatever feeling or emotion we experience is normal! We’re not always going to be happy and on top of the world and that’s ok. Instead of trying to make the uncomfortable feelings disappear, just sit with it, allow yourself to embrace that emotion, work through it, ride the wave, it won’t last forever. It’s time we start normalising the different feelings and emotions we experience everyday. 🍃

This is so important for everyone to know. I hear so many people tell people with mental health struggles to just “snap out of it” “just be happy” “stay positive” and it really bothers me. Mental health is so much more complex than that. If anyone could just flick a switch and have their concerns go away, wouldn’t they do that? Some helpful tips to assist us get the best sleep we can. Sleep is so important, not only for our physical health but our mental health as well. A good nights sleep helps us perform to best of our ability and can just set the day right. I know I’m not at my best when I haven’t had a solid 8hrs. We can be so stressed and overwhelmed during the day, some of these tips can really help us relax and get the well needed rest we require. 🍃
