Sentient Professional Wellbeing

Sentient Professional Wellbeing Our team of experienced therapists support clients dealing with stress, anxiety, depression, grief, loss and other challenges.

We also actively work with and support companion animals and the animal welfare sector. Our experienced psychologists and counsellors work with individuals, couples, families and groups seeking support for stress, anxiety, depression, addictions, grief, trauma and neurodiversity, in addition to other presentations. As part of our work within diversity, we also focus on intersectionality i.e., how our unique identities of ethnicity, gender, sexuality and/or class can shape & impact our life experiences. Diversity also means taking into account the issues of inter speciesism, and supporting both human and animal welfare. This means caring for human beings and our sentient animal companions with whom we share so much of ourselves and lives with.

A positive story on embracing diversity and celebrating inclusion, both in life and in the veterinarian workspace.

When vet Kate Toyer let people know she was no longer Adam, her country town embraced her. To her three children, Kate's transition is not a big deal, but they are proud she made the big decision later on in life to live her truth.

The death of a beloved pet can affect us just as deeply as the loss of a human being. ⁣

Studies have shown that a number of pet owners may sometimes feel it is impossible to replace a pet - almost in the same way it is impossible to replace a child. If you are experiencing the loss of a beloved furry companion, please don’t hesitate to reach out for support.⁣

Marilyn Monroe famously said - ‘𝘞𝘢𝘯𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘵𝘰 𝘣𝘦 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘦𝘭𝘴𝘦 𝘪𝘴 𝘢 𝘸𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘶𝘯𝘪𝘲𝘶𝘦 𝘱𝘦𝘳𝘴𝘰𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘢𝘳𝘦’. So who are you & what does your best self look like? ⁣

Try this interesting exercise. Take a few minutes to select a future time period (e.g., 6 months, 1 year, 5 years from now) - imagine yourself already there and that you have managed to succeed at accomplishing many of your goals. Try not to imagine unrealistic fantasies, but rather, things you feel are positive and attainable within reason. After you have a fairly clear image, write down the details - what are you doing, where do you live, who are you surrounded by, and more importantly, how do you feel being there? ⁣

This brief exercise can be helpful to try for both clients and therapists alike.⁣

Ageism is a type of discrimination that involves prejudice against people based on their age. It is similar to racism and sexism in that it involves holding negative stereotypes about certain groups of people. ⁣

Ageism can affect people of all ages. This type of discrimination can be seen in a wide variety of both personal and professional settings.⁣

The WHO (2017) defines ageism as stereotyping, prejudice, and discrimination against people on the basis of their age. ⁣

The Australian Human Rights Commission highlights that ageism is one of the least understood forms of discriminatory prejudice, and is perhaps more pervasive and socially accepted than sexism or racism.⁣

Research undertaken by the Commission in 2020 and 2021 found ageism can be experienced in different ways - people aged 18-39 are likely to experience ageism through being ridiculed, condescended or ignored, particularly at work. Those aged 40+ are most likely to experience ageism as being turned down for a job.⁣

Similar to sexism or racism, ageism refers to the negative attitudes, stereotypes, and behaviours directed towards people based on their perceived or real age. ⁣

It can also affect people of all ages. ⁣

Similar to other forms of discrimination, ageism has serious and wide-ranging consequences for health and well-being. Some of these include poorer physical and mental health, increased social isolation and a decreased quality of life. ⁣
